France declares state of emergency in New Caledonia

France declared a state of emergency on the Pacific island of New Caledonia on Wednesday (May 15) after three young indigenous Kanak and a police official were killed in riots over electoral reform. Government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot says the decree's goal is "to bring back calm and serenity."
