Crooked House - Agatha Christie / Audiobooks

The first-person narrator is Charles Hayward, who holds a certain position in Cairo at the end of World War II. There he meets Sophia Leonides, who works for the Foreign Ministry there. They fall in love, but postpone their engagement until after the war, when they are reunited at home in England.

When Hayward returns home, he finds only an obituary in The Times: Sophia's grandfather, Aristide Leonides, has died at the age of 87. Because of the war, the entire family lived together under one roof in a large house near London, including Leonidas' second wife, whom many in the family dislike and consider nothing more than a gold digger.
