Fiery Crash on I-5
**Fiery Crash on I-5 Near Grapevine Ignites Brush Fire on Hillside**
**Los Angeles, CA**
A fiery crash along Interstate 5 near the Grapevine resulted in a significant brush fire on the hillside Wednesday afternoon, causing major traffic disruptions and prompting an extensive emergency response.
The accident occurred around 3:30 PM when an electric car's lithium-ion battery overheated, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The flames quickly spread to the dry vegetation, igniting a brush fire that rapidly advanced up the hillside.
Firefighters from multiple departments, including Los Angeles County and Kern County, responded to the scene. They deployed ground crews and aerial units to combat the flames, while the California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed several lanes of Interstate 5 in both directions to allow emergency vehicles access and to ensure the safety of motorists.
"Thanks to the swift action of our firefighting teams, we managed to contain the fire within a few hours, despite the challenging terrain and dry conditions," said the Battalion Chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
By evening, the fire had burned approximately 30 acres, and containment efforts were still ongoing. No injuries were reported from the crash or the fire, but the driver of the electric car was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
The fiery crash on I-5 caused significant traffic delays, with vehicles backed up for miles. Authorities advised drivers to seek alternative routes and expect continued delays as clean-up and investigation efforts continue.
The cause of the fire has been identified as the overheating of the electric car's lithium-ion battery. Fire officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and report any signs of fire, given the ongoing dry conditions in Southern California.
This incident underscores the persistent wildfire risk in the region, especially during peak fire season. Authorities are reminding the public to adhere to fire safety guidelines and to be prepared for potential evacuations.
