The word “doctor” is derived from Latin, meaning “teacher.”

Doctors should aspire to be better teachers, but unfortunately, their once-strong positions have become weaker after the latest chain of events with the pandemic. The knowledge they acquire these days leads many patients into the abyss of the pharmaceutical machine. Doctors have become less effective teachers and now do what they are trained best: regurgitate information that they have been force-fed. Effective teaching should cultivate a culture of continuous learning and collaboration between the doctor and the patient.

Good doctors are adept at asking insightful questions that delve beyond surface symptoms, seeking to uncover the underlying factors influencing a patient’s health. Their inquiries are not merely about confirming diagnoses but understanding the patient’s unique circumstances, experiences, and concerns. By asking probing questions with empathy and curiosity, these doctors create a collaborative environment where patients feel heard and valued, leading to more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans. By fostering open dialogue, good doctors empower patients to actively participate in their healthcare journey, promoting shared decision-making and ultimately improving health outcomes.
