Song sparrows breed throughout most of Newfoundland between March and August. You may see a song sparrow along the edges of Quidi Vidi Lake and you may also see one in the trees near Long Pond as you can see by these clips that our Matt Davis was able to film. Song sparrows are so named for their singing. Song sparrows feed on insects, such as weevils, leaf beetles, ground beetles, caterpillars, dragonflies, grasshoppers, midges, and crane flies and other small invertebrates such as spiders, snails, and earthworms. They also feed on seeds, and berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Animals that prey on song sparrows include cats, and birds of prey. Adult song sparrows are 12 to 17 cm in length, weigh 12 to 53 grams, and have a wingspan of 18 to 24 cm. Song sparrows can live up to 11 years.
