Fatteh is an Egyptian and Levantine dish consisting of pieces of fresh, toasted, grilled, or stale flatbread covered with other ingredients that vary according to region. It is also some times referred to as Shâmiyât in the Levant area. Levantine dish of crumbled, toasted pita covered in warm chickpeas and cool, tangy yogurt sauce . It’s easy to prepare, often vegetarian, makes good use of ingredients I typically have on hand, and is a satisfying snack, starter, or breakfast. The word fatteh is Arabic for “crushed” or “crumbs”, and is the name for all manner of riffs on a crumbled, toasted pita. It's ideal for breakfast or dinner . Varieties come from both fancy Levantine restaurants or street vendors. Egyptians prepare a dish called "fatta" as a feast meal. It is prepared on special occasions, such as to celebrate a woman's first pregnancy or for an Iftar during Ramadan. There are so many different types of fatteh, all more irresistible than the next. One of my favorites is made with seasoned ground beef (or tiny bite size pieces). There is also a chicken version or shrimp or a vegetarian eggplant one!
