Horses are fairly intelligent creatures with minds of their own and occasionally, especially when they are not feeling something, they are more than willing to show you. Personally, I enjoy a good sassy horse every now and then, just, you know, not when I’m riding one.

Part of being an equestrian involves getting horses to vault over obstacles like bars or hedges…

For most people, the term equestrian brings to mind people with way too much money wearing strange uniforms while making horses fancy trot around a way too expensive pen. Did you know, however, that the term equestrian actually relates to anything to do with horses. This includes anything from riding and raising horses to using them for work, like pulling carriages, as an example. It is confusing because the there is also the sport of equestrianism, which is where you get things like Dressage, English “riding and Western or American “riding. There a are number of events within equestrianism that make up the “sport”. Specifically, what you are likely to see at the Olympics.

What happens though when the horse just does NOT want to jump? Oh my god! Haha.

The Olympics events is made up of three major categories; dressage, show jumping and Eventing. Dressage is kind of like the Westminster dog show but for horses that are also being ridden and given commands. Jumping is the where you see the horses vaulting various obstacles. Eventing includes the obedience of dressage, show jumping, fitness tests and the Steeple Chase phase, though that has been phased out in recent years. I did not know this but there is also para-equestrian events at the Paralympics. They only do dressage and driving, which involves pulling carriage among other objects.
