Wiselazer A30 5G 1080p Projector Review

I was keen to see how the newly updated WISELAZER A30 compares to my current projector, the WiMiUS P28, which when I bought it was priced around the same as this one.

In the box were the projector, infrared remote control, UK Power Cable, HDMI Cable, two air filters (one fitted), cleaning cloth and a nicely printed and well-written User Guide. The best way to learn about what this unit does and how to use it is to study the User Guide, and so I include a scan of it in my video.

Build quality seems fine, the unit is smaller than my current one, which quite large and ungainly, but it is still substantial enough to feel hefty and robust enough to absorb the odd knock. The projector itself is pretty minimalist with an attractive dark grey matt finish with the only button one for power on the top surface. On the back are two USB ports, two HDMI ports, audio out and power-in ports and an infrared receiver. On one side is the air filter intake and on the other is the air filter outlet and recessed knurled focusing ring. On the base are the mounting points hidden behind removable plugs, the access panel for the air filter and the rake angle adjustment knob. The remote is full-sized with proper clicky buttons and is simple and intuitive to use. Sadly there is no tripod mount hole on the underside, which is a pity and a hard to understand omission.

Natively, the unit supports 1920 x 1080P resolution but will downscale 4K files seamlessly enough. I found that some file types were not recognised when played directly through USB but since I use the projector with an HDMI connected Fire TV stick -with an adjacent USB port to power it – this was not an issue. Although the projector itself has a 5G wifi connection, the Fire TV stick’s built-in wifi gives me all I need both from the internet and my network NAS as well as giving good quality in-sync audio.

Audio comes from two built-in speakers and is good quality and although not super loud it still easily drowns out the pleasingly muted fan noise. The projector has built-in Bluetooth and this gives me the option to use external Bluetooth speakers, although in use I find it more convenient to connect them to the Firestick’s own Bluetooth. The native 5G wifi allows for OTA firmware updates as well as phone and other smart device connections.

Although it is slightly less bright than my old projector this is more than made up for by the increased contrast ratio of 12000:1 compared to 8000:1 of my old machine. The is a real advance with more shades of black and gradations of white visible that gives far less muddy nighttime scenes and fewer burnt-out skies.

Video quality is excellent with a wall-filling image bright enough for curtains drawn daytime use. At night the image is even better as regards colour, dynamic range and contrast. The image from this projector beats my current one and is both sharper and more detailed with no sharpness fall off away from the centre and with improved saturation without bleeding or overload. I find text far easier to read across the whole screen than with my old projector which has a distinct sharpness loss toward the screen edges. Text on the WISELAZER is sharp across the entire screen.

The image size can be zoomed directly from the remote control between 50 - 100%. Likewise the remote can be used for manual 4-Point Keystone & ± 45° Keystone Correction to compensate for image distortion when the projector lens and screen are not correctly aligned. These features are important to allow the projector to be positioned conveniently whilst still giving a wall filling well proportioned image.

This is an excellent projector with superb image quality, decent sound and a good range of features including mirroring from both Android and Apple smartphones. Some users may mourn the lack of physical controls on the projector itself but I am not one of them as I much prefer to operate the device from the handset.

Currently discounted from £249.99 to just £149.99, this is a superb projector for the price and gives great results. Pair it with a Fire TV stick, Apple TV or Roku and it becomes a viable alternative to a big screen TV costing many times the price. I would be quite happy to buy this projector again and would not waste too much time trying to find a better one.
