There is a common misconception that there is such a thing as a Russian opposition which is against Putin, against the Russian regime, and against the Russian war in Ukraine. Decision makers in the West somehow think that those people should be on the Ukrainian side and be instrumental in a regime change in Russia.

We argue that this is delusional. Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the deceased Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, has recently been named one of Time's top 100 most influential people, even earning a mention by the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. Just a couple of weeks later, Navalny’s organization conducted an investigation into corruption in the Russian Defense Ministry, which led to the arrest of one of the highest officials. This means that Navalny’s team is inadvertently helping the Russian war machine become more effective.

This is but one example among several that raise the question: should the West help the Russian opposition at all?
