"You are the one that left." "For my career." "I don't buy that." Brainstorm Media has revealed the trailer for an indie comedy titled Cora Bora, the latest from indie filmmaker Hannah Pearl Utt. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and it also played at the Provincetown, Frameline, Outfest LA, and Stockholm Film Festivals last year. Now set for a release in June in limited theaters. Cora Bora stars Hack's standout talent Meg Stalter as Cora. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, with Chelsea Peretti and Darrell Hammond. This looks light and screwy and funny. Might be fun.

‘Thelma’ Trailer: June Squibb Is a 93-Year-Old Grandma Out for Revenge
The IndieWire review called Stalter a “whirlwind and a universe unto herself” who boasts “her unique brand of uncomfortably confident loser” onscreen.

Stalter told Entertainment Weekly that “Cora Bora” marked her “first really big role” and is “definitely different than anything I’ve gotten to do so far.” She added, “I love being on ‘Hacks’ and I love making videos and performing live, but this is the first earnest thing I’ve gotten to show that’s a little more dramatic.”

“Hacks” returns to Max on May 2.

“Cora Bora” is produced by Mallory Schwartz, Jeffrey Soros, and Simon Horsman, with Andrew Blau, Luke Rodgers, Morgan Earnest, Rhianon Jones, and Tristan Scott–Behrends as executive producers.

Lead actress Stalter is next set to star in Lena Dunham’s Netflix series “Too Much,” playing a workaholic reeling from a breakup who opts to uproot her life to London. She soon meets Felix, played by “The White Lotus” star Will Sharpe, who dismantles her own objections to finding love again.

The series is billed as “an ex-pat rom-com for the disillusioned who wonder if true love is still possible, but sincerely hope that it is,” per Netflix. Dunham co-created the series with her husband, Luis Felber, who provides original music.

“Cora Bora” premieres in theaters June 14 from Brainstorm Media. Check out the trailer below.
Cora Bora, starring Megan Stalter, offers a fresh take on LA, revealing its unglamorous side and emphasizing the urgency of the protagonist's situation.
The film depicts Cora's emotional turmoil as she navigates her failing music career and struggling relationship, showcasing Stalter's talent beyond comedy.
With a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Cora Bora is a festival darling worth checking out for its realistic portrayal of LA and compelling storyline.
One of last year's festival darlings, Cora Bora, has just dropped its first trailer ahead of its theatrical release on June 14th. Cora Bora tells the story of Cora, who heads back home to win over her girlfriend before realising it isn't just her romantic life that needs fixing. The movie stars Megan Stalter (Hacks), Jojo T. Gibbs (Twenties), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Ayden Mayeri (Veep), Thomas Mann (Project X), Chrissie Fit (Pitch Perfect), Andre Hyland (The Fourth), Margaret Cho (All-American Girl), and Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), with Darrell Hammond (Saturday Night Live).

Directed by Hannah Pearl Utt and penned by Shiva Baby and Palm Trees and Power Lines executive producer Rhianon Jones, the movie revolves around the complicated character Cora. She appears confident yet is emotionally unstable and faces numerous challenges. Besides the typical daily annoyances of interacting with others, she's struggling to kickstart her barely-existent music career. At the same time, she's trying to keep her shaky relationship with her girlfriend intact. Cora left college and moved from her hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles to dedicate herself to music. She was once part of The Maybe Nots, a band with a dedicated fan base. However, with the band disbanded, she's now eager to succeed as a solo artist.

Is 'Cora Bora' Worth Checking Out?
From the reviews that are available, absolutely. The film currently sits with a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider's Emily Bernard saw the film at SXSW back in March 2023, and praised Stalter's performance, as well as the depiction of Los Angeles in the movie.

It’s surprising how much Cora Bora tilts dramatic, with the setting of Los Angeles being a major contributing factor. Not to sound cliché, but LA really felt like a character in this movie. The film depicted the City of Angels in a very unglamorous, but far more realistic way than a movie usually would. This helped emphasize the dire situation that Cora found herself in, and the urgency with which she needed to remedy said situation. There’s also a late-stage hefty reveal that provides a lot of context and possible explanation as to why Cora is the way that she is.

Cora Bora is a bit of a surprise first leading role for Stalter as it's a comedy that’s soaked in heartache, trauma, and self-discovery. It’s a vehicle that proves she can not only make us laugh, but make us feel some feelings, too.

Cora Bora opens in theatres on June 14.

Synopsis
Cora’s (Meg Stalter) relationship is not going well. She decides to put her fledgling music career and life of random hookups on hold to go back home to win her girlfriend back, where she realizes that it’s much more than her love life that needs salvaging.

Reviews
Indiewire review gave the film a grade of C+, wrote, “A conventional quirky comedy about a struggling musician trying to win her girlfriend back, “Cora Bora” follows a fairly predictable formula, right down to a kooky detour at an orgiastic poly commune. Stalter is a whirlwind and a universe unto herself, and the other players merely respond to whatever zaniness she throws down. Though reliably funny, her unique brand of uncomfortably confident loser isn’t quite enough to carry a whole film, but her charisma goes a long way towards elevating the familiar material.”

Hollywood Reporter review hails Megan Stalter’s performance in the film, writing, “By far the best reason to watch Cora Bora for Stalter, who in her first feature lead performance makes a convincing case for many more. The actress is perhaps best known for her turn in Hacks as Kayla, whose utter incompetence is outmatched only by her almost pathological self-confidence. Cora shares with Kayla a fundamental inability to be anyone but herself, as well as a general air of chaos. But Cora Bora also affords Stalter the opportunity to expand her range, drawing out new notes of sadness or uncertainty in Cora’s comedic bluster. In moments the movie asks her to dig deep, she breaks Cora open with such raw, ragged sincerity that it’s hard to look away.”

The upcoming queer comedy sees Stalter star as a musician who returns home to try and win back her girlfriend. But once Cora gets there, she realizes her love life isn’t the only thing that needs saving…

Along with Stalter, “Cora Bora” also stars Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, and Chrissie Fit. Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, Chelsea Peretti, and Darrell Hammond round out the main cast.

Hannah Pearl Utt directs “Cora Bora,” her first feature since 2019’s “Before You Know It.” Rhianon Jones pens the film’s script. “Cora Bora” also features original music and a score composed by Miya Folick. Mallory Schwartz, Jeffrey Soros, and Simon Horsman produce the film, with Andrew Blau, Luke Rodgers, Morgan Earnest, Jones, and Tristan Scott-Behrends as executive producers.

“Cora Bora” premieres at SXSW last year to rave reviews, with the film currently holding an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And the movie’s June 14 theatrical release is just one part of a banner year for Stalter. “Hacks” returns to Max for its third season on May 3, and then later this year Stalter starts shooting Lena Dunham‘s upcoming Netflix show “Too Much.” That series stars the actress as a burnt-out workaholic who leaves behind her life in London after a breakup, only to meet someone who makes her reconsider if love is still possible. Will Sharpe co-stars.

But back to “Cora Bora”: Utt’s comedy hits theaters everywhere on June 14. Will it be a star-maker for Meg Stalter? Let’s find out. Watch the trailer for “Cora Bora” below.
Brainstorm Media has acquired North American rights for “Cora Bora,” a millennial comedy starring “Hacks” breakout Megan Stalter and “The Good Place’s” Manny Jacinto.

The film, directed by Hannah Pearl Utt (“Before You Know It”) and written by Rhianon Jones, will be released in theaters sometime in February 2024. It follows a struggling musician named Cora, whose open relationship is on the rocks. So she goes home to Portland to win back her girlfriend and salvage her love life.

“We are delighted to share ‘Cora Bora’ with audiences,” says Brainstorm Media CEO Michelle Shwarzstein. “Hannah Pearl Utt and Rhianon Jones have created a fun and hilarious story which explores the complexities of love and self-identity. Cora is the type of flawed yet relatable character whom we don’t get to see reflected on screen nearly enough.”

“Cora Bora,” which premiered at SWSW, features original music and a score composed by indie artist Miya Folick. The ensemble cast includes Jojo T. Gibbs (“Fresh”), Chelsea Peretti (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Margaret Cho, Heather Morris (“Glee”) and Darrell Hammond (“Saturday Night Live”).

It's a 1960s-set tale of two men, their pride, greed and bromance. Created and directed by Shin Yeon-shick. Starring Song Kang-ho, Byun Yo-han, Lee Kyu-hyung, Jin Ki-joo, and Seo Hyun-woo. It is Song Kang-ho's first drama series since his debut. Byun Yo-han co-stars as Kim San, an elite graduate from the Korean Military Academy. STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. Trailer
"We were on top of the world." HBO Docs has unveiled the trailer for a documentary series titled STAX: Soulsville U.S.A., arriving for streaming later this month. This docu series from HBO "captures how an underdog record label launched a movement and superstar musicians like Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding." The Memphis soul sound that electrified the world... In 1960s Memphis, an audacious set of interracial collaborators dared to make their own music on their own terms, forming Stax Records, one of America's most influential creators of Black music. At the peak of its success, Stax artists commemorated the Watts Rebellion by playing to over 100,000 African Americans at the 1972 benefit concert Wattstax. During an era of major social turbulence, systemic inequity, racial tensions, Stax saw stunning artistic & cultural success, and managed to rebound from repeated business setbacks & losses before the studio ultimately dissolved after 15 pioneering years. With appearances by Otis Redding, Estelle Axton, Al Bell, Steve Cropper, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones, Sam Moore, & Deanie Parker. Looks like a lovely tribute to Stax and all their artists.

Benedict Cumberbatch in 80s NYC + Puppets Series 'Eric' Full Trailer
By Alex Billington
Eric Trailer
"Don't give up on him" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a very dark, emotional drama series titled Eric, the latest creation from award-winning British writer Abi Morgan (of Shame, The Iron Lady, Suffragette, "The Split", "All About Marriage"). Set for a streaming debut on Netflix later in May. Vincent, a grief-stricken father whose son goes missing, finds solace through his friendship with Eric, the monster that lives under Edgar's bed. It's set in NYC in the 1980s and features "puppets...lots of puppets." Netflix's Eric mini-series stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, and McKinley Belcher III. It follows the desperate search of a father when his nine year old son disappears one morning on the way to school. "As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home." The cast also includes Dan Fogler and Clarke Peters. This looks dark and gritty and strange and emotional! Not an easy thing to pull off. It sort of reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are but in 80s NY.

Watch: Wes Anderson Directed This Funny Commercial for Montblanc
By Alex Billington
Wes Anderson's Montblanc Commercial
"in the morning, by the way, we'll all three ski back down to base camp after breakfast." What a surprise! There's another new Wes Anderson short film now out online for everyone to enjoy. It turns out Anderson has directed a funny 3-minute short film commercial for the uber fancy German pen company Montblanc. They just debuted it online and it's absolutely worth a quick watch. You have to see what Wes cooked up for them! He even appears in this one! The short is celebrating 100 years of the pen called the Meisterstück, that was first introduced by the company in 1924. Which actually is quite remarkable! "An ode to individual style and mastery." The film stars Rupert Friend, Jason Schwartzman, and Wes Anderson as three Montblanc fans (or perhaps aficionados?) who take refuge in a mountain cabin near the real Mont Blanc to discuss their love for and appreciation of Montblanc pens. As lovely as they are, they're definitely out of my price range. Even if this is all just obvious advertising, it's still amusing seeing these three together in a film.
