DARPA: Hunter Seeker Drones | THE PENTAGON BRAIN | Military Industrial Complex

We already have the technology to create fully autonomous weapon systems that can hunt and kill targets, as well as the ability to create fully autonomous kill chains.

From stealth technology to GPS to vaccines, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, has developed some of the most consequential weapons and technologies of all time. Annie Jacobsen, author of the new book "The Pentagon's Brain", on the agency's storied past and fascinating future.

DARPA hires scientists and defence contractors to develop new weapons and technologies. Annie Jacobsen tried to find out what they're up to. She has written a history of the agency called "The Pentagon's Brain". It explores an agency that is both known and unknown. It's unknown because so much of what it does is classified. It's known because much of its work eventually spills over into civilian life, including the internet. When the government needed emergency help with vaccines, it turned to DARPA.

Of the 2.5 million Americans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, 300,000 came home with traumatic brain injuries. DARPA has initiated a number of programmes to improve cognitive function, to repair some of this damage. And these programmes focus on implanting brain chips into the tissue of the brain. The Pentagon has been pursuing artificial intelligence since the 1950s. And we keep bumping up against a barrier. And what my sources have suggested to me is that the key to artificial intelligence lies in the human brain. And the suggestion is that these brain chip programmes, which DARPA is keeping very secret, are actually prototypes for making artificial intelligence a reality.

Does DARPA live in this space where we could destroy ourselves while defending ourselves? That is always the conundrum of the military-industrial complex. And that leads us to the questions about artificial intelligence and the Pentagon's plans for hunter-killer drones. And these are drones that can ultimately act on their own, where you can, and this is a poor man's example, but you can show a drone a photograph and say go kill this man and report back to me. And if you look at the documents that the Pentagon is producing for its plans 20, 25 years out, DARPA is leading that effort.
