But her case was both witnessed and documented by Wilhem Wittneben, the chief physician at what was then one of the largest insane asylums in Germany (Hephata), and Friedrich Happich, the director of that same institution. Käthe was among the most profoundly disabled of the patients at the asylum. Yet, despite all this, as the woman lay dying “Käthe,” wrote Happich, “who had never spoken a single word, being entirely mentally disabled from birth on, sang dying songs to herself. Specifically, she sang over and over again, ‘Where does the soul find its home, its peace? Peace, peace, heavenly peace!’” For half an hour she sang. Her face, up to then so stultified, was transfigured and spiritualized. Then, she quietly passed away.” By the 20th century, doctors stopped reporting these incidents because they failed to align with “scientific materialism”. The Gilbert and Ellice Islands is a tiny group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. A near death experience or NDE is what people experience when they almost die, or they die and are resuscitated. The experience has been used for millenia as an indicator of what happens on death. Pope Gregory the Great, in the sixth century, collected descriptions of these experiences. Whether someone has a NDE when they are close to death, seems to depend on how close to death they were. A person might suffer a cardiac arrest or other life threatening event but not, in reality, be at risk from dying – those who have a NDE have been.
