"Daddy's Home," written by band members James "Shep" Sheppard, Clarence Bassett and Charles Baskerville (on the original Hull Records recording) and James "Shep" Sheppard and William Miller (after a law suit, on Roulette Records), was the Limelites first release and their only top 40 hit climbing to the no. 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961 (Whitburn, 2013). Sheppard began his recording history with the Jamaica, Queens, NY doo-wop group the Heartbeats, who had a hit with "A Thousand Miles Away." Two years later, Sheppard formed the Limelites; they disbanded in 1966 (allmusic, 2024). The song has been recorded by many artist but the recordings that hit the Billboard Hot 100 are Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown (1967 no. 91), Jermaine Jackson (1972 no. 9) and Cliff Richard (198f2 no. 23) (Whitburn, 2013)."Shep" Sheppard . . . was murdered on January 24, 1970 [34 yrs old]. He was found dead in his car on the Long Island Expressway, having been beaten and robbed" (C. Tucker, blackpast, Sep. 28, 2021).

Lyrics:

You're my love, you're my angel
You're the girl of my dreams
I'd like to thank you for waiting patiently
Daddy's home, your daddy's home to stay

How I've waited for this moment to be by your side
Your best friend wrote and told me
You had teardrops in your eyes
Daddy's home, your daddy's home to stay

It wasn't on a Sunday
(Monday and Tuesday went by)
It wasn't on a Tuesday afternoon
(All I could do was cry)
But I made a promise that you treasured
I made it back home to you

How I've waited for this moment to be by your side
Your best friend wrote and told me
You had teardrops in your eyes
Daddy's home, your daddy's home to stay

Daddy's home to stay
I'm not a thousand miles away
