This is the incredible moment a Topi mum charged antler first at a hyena in a desperate attempt to save her newly born calf.

Safari guide Kevin Sayialel was guiding guests resident at Great Plains Conservation's Mara Plains Camp, Kenya, on November 10 when he spotted an antelope with its new born baby.

Dramatic footage shows an opportunistic scavenger grabbing the calf in its jaws before trying to drag it away.

Understandably, the distraught Topi mother charged straight at the hyena with her horns in a fruitless attempt to save her new born, with the predator eventually running off with the meal.

Kevin said: “In my 14 years of guiding, I had never seen an encounter like it before. It was a highlight for the guests as well.

“We had just gone out on our morning game drive when I spotted that the Topi had just given birth to the calf. We stayed at that sighting for about 30 minutes, before the hyena spotted the calf.

"Immediately the hyena started charging towards the Topi to hunt the calf. The fight went on for about six minutes and eventually resulted in the calf being killed and taken by the hyena.”
