Railfanning on CN's Freeport Sub on Cinco de Mayo - We Stumbled Across Something Really Neat

Sunday afternoon. Cinco de Mayo 2024. Spring is finally here to stay. The flowers are blooming and it's high time we get outside and look for trains! We spent the afternoon on CN's Freeport Sub near Powis Rd and Munger Rd (Munger is the allegedly haunted railroad crossing, but I did not see any ghosts).

This line was constructed in 1890 by the Chicago, Madison and Northern Railroad and was soon owned by the Illinois Central. This line provided a "branch" from the IC's northern terminus of its main line in Chicago, west to the "other" main line in Freeport. It later provided IC with trackage to Iowa. The line hosted Amtrak trains (the "Blackhawk" with service from Chicago to Dubuque) from 1974 to 1981. The line was part of CN's 1998 purchase of the IC and now hosts a handful of CN freight trains each day.
