The idea of politicians genuinely engaging with citizens, explaining legislation in detail, and actively seeking their support does indeed evoke a sense of a more ideal, participatory democracy. This concept appears to be increasingly rare in contemporary politics, where often, the legislative process seems disconnected from the everyday lives of citizens. The Citizens Ratification Amendment (CRA) seeks to reinvigorate this old ideal by instituting a system where politicians must obtain direct approval from the people for legislative actions.
The CRA effectively shifts the dynamic from one where legislation is often passed with minimal public input to one where citizens have a direct say in the approval or rejection of laws. This change compels politicians to be more accountable and transparent about their legislative proposals. They would need to explain the merits of each law clearly and convincingly to gain public support, much like the earlier times you reminisced about. This could lead to a more informed citizenry and legislation that more accurately reflects the will of the people.
Describing this system as a "political utopia" captures the optimism surrounding the CRA. It suggests a return to a more engaged and democratic process, where the power truly lies with the people, and politicians are more closely aligned with the needs and desires of their constituents. While no system is without its challenges, the CRA proposes a fundamentally democratic approach that could lead to significant improvements in how laws are made and how responsive government is to the governed.
