Before becoming king, Macbeth was a Scottish noble and a valiant military man1. He succeeded his father as mormaer (chief) in the province of Moray, in northern Scotland2. Macbeth established himself on the throne after killing his cousin King Duncan I in battle.

Upon being told by Seyton ‘The Queen, my Lord, is dead’, Macbeth replies: ‘She should have died hereafter: / There would have been time for such a word’.
