A demonstration of the obvious—the extreme magnetism of a magnetar is the absolute clearest case that electric currents drive the observed phenomena of these mysterious objects.

In 2003, Magnetar XTE J1810-179 was discovered emitting chaotic radio waves that didn’t match any astrophysical model. Then it suddenly stops in 2008. A decade later, its weird emissions are detected again, except they're twisted in an inexplicable way that indicate the star is wobbling.

In a Science Alert report dated April 10, 2024, Marcus Lower, an astrophysicist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Canberra, Australian said, “Our results suggest there is a superheated plasma above the magnetar's magnetic pole . . . How exactly the plasma is doing this is still to be determined."
