On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs announced that they had summoned a senior Chinese embassy official due to the harassment of Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. The harassment included dangerous maneuvers, use of water cannons, and other aggressive actions by China Coast Guard and Chinese Maritime Militia vessels against Filipino government vessels. The incident on April 30 resulted in damage to a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel and a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) boat near the China-controlled Scarborough Shoal. Manila demanded that Chinese vessels leave the area immediately. The Chinese embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment. This incident is part of a long history of territorial disputes between the two countries.
