After realizing my previous credit card strategy was too complicated, I decided to simplify things…A LOT. Going forward, 95% of my personal spend will be going through 5 credit cards. 3 of those cards are with the same issuer, which alone is a big step forward in terms of simplicity because it means I can manage them all with 1 login. Plus, they all earn the same type of rewards.

It basically boils down to this: I have a new CORE credit card setup to capture that 95% of spend, and then the remainder involves select hotel credit cards and an airline credit card.

To me, it’s best to earn credit card rewards points that are flexible and transferrable. That way, you can use them in a wide variety of ways without having to be loyal to – or subject to devaluations from – a single program. For reference, here are some of the best currencies to focus on for your main spend / daily drivers. Consider focusing on 1 or 2 currencies to avoid getting too spread out:
- Chase Ultimate Rewards points, earned by the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Freedom Flex, and Chase Freedom Unlimited.
- Citi ThankYou points, earned by the Citi Premier, Citi Custom Cash, and Citi Double Cash.
- Amex Membership Rewards points, earned by the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, and Amex Blue Business Plus.
- Capital One Venture Miles, earned by the Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture cards.
- Bilt Rewards points, earned by the Bilt Mastercard
- Wells Fargo Rewards points, earned by the Wells Fargo Autograph, Wells Fargo Autograph Journey, and indirectly via the Wells Fargo Active Cash (the cash back earned with this card can be converted into points if you have either of the two Autograph versions).

Of course, you can also blend cards across multiple programs mentioned above, but that’s generally best if you prefer travel rewards and intend to transfer points into a common partner program.
