Brot af Sigurðarkviðu (Fragment of The Lay of Sigurð) | The Poetic Edda

Brot af Sigurðarkviðu is a fragment of a longer lay, suspected at up to 200 stanzas, about Sigurð, the dragon slayer of legend. We begin with the introduction as written by Bellows, focusing mostly on the make-up of the rest of the fragment that was missing, (the missing section being 8 consecutive leaves (15 pages each) that's whereabouts are unknown — and could have included not only the beginning of Brot but also is speculated as possibly including a presently unknown poem or two).

The poem begins as Hogni inquires to Gunnar as to why he slayed the hero-king Sigurð. Brynhild berates them about the death of her lover. Sigurð's wife, Guthrun, has a mournful dream, which Brynhild interprets as a curse on Gunnar. The poem summarizes around different stories about the details surround Sigurð's death, stating "But in this they are all agreed, that they deceived him in his trust of them, and fell upon him when he was lying down and unprepared."
