Worse still, this knowledge gap was intentionally exploited by unscrupulous leaders during the 2016 election and pandemic, manipulating millions through propaganda and misinformation just as the fascist regimes of 1930s Germany had. The bleak reality is that until educational priorities are realigned to emphasize substantive understanding of history and civics, citizens will remain vulnerable to psychological manipulation by those who seek power at any cost without regard for human dignity. This failing leaves little hope of creating an informed electorate able to think critically about their role in society.
