How 'Bout Us (Champaign, 1981). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-04-24. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"How 'Bout Us," written by keyboardist Dana Walden, was Champaign's first and only top 20 hit, landing at the no. 12 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remaining on the chart for 23 weeks (Whitburn, 2013) ), hit the top no. 1 position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and no. 3 on the Billboard R&B chart (allmusic, 2024). The group was named after their home town Champaign, Illinois (smoothradio, 2020). The band recorded a "demo and sent out to the A&R departments of various labels. Most wanted to record the song on an artist already signed to their label roster, but Walden refused to grant the rights; instead holding out for a record deal for the band. Champaign signed with the Infinity label, but was soon without a deal when the label folded. With some help from producer Joseph Wissert, the band got a deal with Columbia Records," where the song was finally released (allmusic, 2024).

Lyrics:

Ooh, short and sweet
No sense in draggin' on past our needs
Let's don't keep it hangin' on
If the fire's out, we should both be gone

Some people are made for each other
Some people are made for another for life, how 'bout us
Some people can hold it together
Last through all kinds of weather, tell me can we

Now don't get me wrong
'Cause I'm not tryin' now to end it all
It's just that I have seen
Too many lover's hearts lose their dreams

Some people are made for each other
Some people are made for another for life, how 'bout us
Some people can hold it together
Last through all kinds of weather, tell me, can we

How 'bout us
How 'bout us, baby
How 'bout us
How 'bout us, baby

Some people are made for each other
Some people are made for another for life, how 'bout us
Some people can hold it together
Last through all kinds of weather, tell me, can we
