A bladder infection, also called a urinary tract infection (UTI), is an infection that occurs in the urinary system. The urinary system is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and produce urine. The ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder stores urine until you urinate. The urethra carries urine from the bladder out of the body.

Most common causes of bladder infection:

Bacteria. E. coli, a type of bacteria that normally lives in the intestines, is the most common cause of bladder infections. E. coli can travel from the anus to the urethra and then into the bladder.

Sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse can push bacteria into the urethra. Women are more likely than men to get bladder infections after sex because their urethra is shorter.

Catheter use. A catheter is a tube that is inserted into the bladder to drain urine. People who use catheters for a long time are more likely to get bladder infections.

Other medical conditions. Diabetes, kidney stones, and a weakened immune system can increase your risk of bladder infections.

Most common symptoms of bladder infection:

Pain or burning when you urinate (dysuria)
Frequent urination, even if you don't pass much urine
Urgent need to urinate (urinary urgency)
Feeling like you can't empty your bladder completely
Cloudy or bloody urine
Strong odor to your urine
Pelvic pain in women
