The Israeli military's chief intelligence chief hasresigned, saying he took responsibility for the failuresbefore Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), MajorGeneral Aharon Haliva will retire once his successor isselected. He is the first senior figure to step down overthe attack, which were the deadliest in Israel's history.

Israeli military and intelligence officials missed orignored multiple warnings before hundreds of Hamasgunmen breached the Gaza border fence on 7 October,and attacked nearby Israeli communities, militarybases and a music festival.

About 1,200 Israelis and foreigners - mostly civilianswere killed and 253 others were taken back to Gaza ashostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel responded by launching its most intense everwar in Gaza, during which more than 34,000Palestinians - most of them children and womenhave been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
