Over 13 million Ecuadorians are anticipated to participate in a referendum on Sunday, focusing on security issues that could influence the political trajectory of President Daniel Noboa and his crime-fighting agenda.

Noboa, who assumed office last November, pledged to tackle the escalating crime rates in Ecuador.

He has since pursued an aggressive approach, declaring war on criminal gangs, imposing a state of emergency, and approving a controversial raid on the Mexican embassy to apprehend a former vice president accused of corruption.

The outcome of the referendum will gauge public support for Noboa’s policies and may impact his decision on seeking re-election in 2025, CNN reported.
