EXCLUSIVE: BCDF Pictures has acquired film rights to Elena Armas‘ 2022 New York Times bestseller The Spanish Love Deception, tapping Peter Hutchings (The Hating Game) to adapt it for the big screen.

The romantic comedy from Simon & Schuster is the first installment in a series of the same name. It tells the story of Catalina Martín, who desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding in Spain. Especially since she lied and told her large, raucous family that she has a new American boyfriend. Now everyone expects her to bring him, including the ex who drove Catalina to leave Spain in the first place. Enter Aaron Blackford – her tall, handsome, insufferably condescending colleague – who surprisingly offers to step in.

The Spanish Love Deception has been published in over 25 languages. The book won the Goodreads Choice Award for Debut Novel of the Year, and has become a phenomenon on TikTok, boasting a hashtag with over 100M views. It has also been named a “Must-Read” by Cosmopolitan, Publisher’s Weekly, Bustle, Elle, Paste, Glamour, Business Insider, Buzzfeed, and USA Today. Its sequel, The American Roommate Experiment, will follow in September. Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady will produce the Spanish Love Deception film for BCDF Pictures.

“I am thrilled to have BCDF Pictures working on the adaptation of THE SPANISH LOVE DECEPTION and I have no doubt they will do an amazing job bringing Aaron and Catalina to life,” said Armas. “Believe me when I say that I am obsessed with the script and Peter Hutchings’s vision of these characters and Spanish setting I keep so close to my heart. THE SPANISH LOVE DECEPTION readers are not ready for the Martín family!”

Hutchings’ credits on the directing side include the upcoming Which Brings Me to You, as well as the features The Hating Game, Then Came You, The Outcasts and Rhymes with Banana. He also previously penned the films Can You Keep a Secret? and The Last Keepers, exec producing the latter.

Past titles from BCDF include Hutchings’ The Hating Game and Then Came You, Leslye Headland’s Bachelorette, Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts and Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground. This year, the company is also producing titles including the female trucker pic Big Rig, starring Vanessa Hudgens; The Ploughmen, directed by Ed Harris; Which Brings Me to You, starring Lucy Hale; 2022 SXSW title To Leslie starring Andrea Riseborough and Allison Janney; an adaptation of Gabrielle Zevin’s International Bestseller The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, starring Kunal Nayyar, Christina Hendricks and Hale; and an adaptation of the bestselling supernatural romance series Hush, Hush, which has been greenlit as a feature franchise at Paramount+.

Hollywood has always been entangled with the reflections of life, death, crime, and all the chaos in between. To this day, gun-swinging, charismatic assassins or hitmen, who can turn anything around them into fatal weapons populate our screens and interest viewers and filmmakers alike. On one hand, we have the John Wicks of the world, and on the other, the noirish hired guns who like to philosophize about their kills through voiceover.

Seeing the popularity of assassins, many filmmakers have attempted to satirize the genre in the past by adding elements of dark comedy to the bloody mixture of violence, stunts, and philosophy. Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges and David Leitch’s Bullet Train are examples of comedies surrounding assassins who are killers as much as they are jesters, and the HBO series Barry, starring Bill Hader, also brilliantly satirizes the trope of the traumatized assassin and Hollywood’s fascination with the same.

Richard Linklater's Hit Man looks to find a middle ground as the action-packed noir thriller filters the hitman tropes through lighthearted moments and a darkly comedic lens. Featuring Glen Powell, in a star-making turn he wrote for himself, the film explores an undercover mission turned into an impossible romance. If an intriguing new film from one of our best modern filmmakers sounds as exciting to you as it does to us, read our guide below to learn everything we know about Richard Linklater’s Hit Man.

Does 'Hit Man' Have a Release Date?
Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, smirking, in Hit ManImage via Netflix
Hit Man is set to stream on Netflix on June 7, 2024, right in the midst of the summer movie season. Hit Man will be joining an exciting lineup of titles arriving on Netflix during the summer movie season, including Atlas starring Jennifer Lopez, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F starring Eddie Murphy, Unfrosted starring Jerry Seinfeld, and The Union starring Mark Wahlberg.

Hit Man had its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2023. Soon after that, it had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11. The film has been extremely well received at both festivals, as evident from Ross Bonaime's review for Collider, which you can read right here.

Netflix purchased the distribution rights for Hit Man for a whopping $20 million, which made it the biggest purchase at TIFF 2023. Hit Man wasn't the only buzzy film that the streamer bought at the festival as it also acquired Anna Kendrick's directorial debut Woman of the Hour and the Elizabeth Olsen-led drama His Three Daughters.

Will 'Hit Man' Receive a Theatrical Release?
Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, knocking on a motel room door in Hit ManImage via Netflix
While Netflix will be distributing Hit Man and releasing it on the service on June 7, they have announced that the film will receive a limited theatrical release on May 24, 2024. This isn't new territory for Netflix as many of their films have received limited theatrical releases to qualify for awards. Most recently, titles such as David Fincher's The Killer and Bradley Cooper's Maestro received theatrical releases before landing on the streaming service.

Is There a Trailer for 'Hit Man'?
Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Hit Man on January 22, 2024. Set to "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" by Jay & The Techniques, the first look highlights the film's comically dark tone, mixing elements of crime movies and romantic comedies.

The second trailer for Hit Man was released by Netflix on April 18, 2024. Set to Santa Esmeralda's cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," the trailer captures the movie's central romance between the characters played by Powell and Arjona.

What Is 'Hit Man' About?

Hit Man is about an ordinary philosophy professor named Gary Johnson, who's devoted all his time to devouring Kant and taking care of his cats Id and Ego, with no time for any thrills or a dating life for that matter. Gary decides to help out the police in small undercover gigs for surveillance and ends up pretending to be a hired assassin, and quickly discovers that he's good at it owing to his understanding of the human condition. The job eventually takes Gary to Madison, who hires Gary to kill someone for her. Their first meeting establishes their instant chemistry and an interesting dynamic, which forms the crux of the film.

Linklater takes the fairly standard setup for a compelling noir and finds the underlying dark humor and philosophical questions, and the result is a darkly thrilling romp that keeps you on the edge of your seats and has you gasping for breath despite Linklater's usual laid-back style. Inspired by a true story published in the Texas Monthly, the film often feels like a meta-exploration of the art of acting itself, and has a lot of things going on with a busy plot unlike most of Linklater's films, which he commented on in an interview with Collider:

"Yeah, this one was kind of different for me, if anyone wants to look too closely. It's a little more plotty, there's twists and turns, and I felt like, “I'm in a genre here. I'm trying to deliver in the film noir genre and the screwball comedy.” This is very plotty, and it turns, and we're manipulating the audience, so they have to be oriented in a certain way. So, it's not my usual flow, but I mean, that was the fun challenge."

The official synopsis for Hit Man from Netflix reads:

Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater’s sunlit neo-noir stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play acting, deception, and escalating stakes. Co-written by Linklater and Powell and inspired by an unbelievable true story, Hit Man is a cleverly existential comedy about identity.

Who Stars in 'Hit Man'?
Adria Arjona and Glen Powell cozy up in a kitchen in Hit ManImage via Netflix
Glen Powell plays the leading man in Hit Man, in what many are calling his breakout performance. Powell puts his charisma and acting chops on full display in a role that sees him don many avatars and a wild array of outfits that come together in this delightfully fun turn as a fake hitman. 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for the Top Gun: Maverick star, with the raunchy rom-com Anyone But You co-starring Sydney Sweeney releasing in December, and seems poised to shoot the actor further into superstardom. This isn't Powell's first time working with Linklater, having previously appeared in Fast Food Nation, Everybody Wants Some!!, and Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood. In an interview with Collider, Linklater praised Powell as an ideal collaborator and compared him to Ethan Hawke, saying:

"Over the pandemic, he called me up with this article he had read, and I was like, 'Yeah, I read that a long time ago. I do know that story from Texas Monthly,' and then we just started collaborating on it. Glen's like the greatest guy. He's an ideal collaborator, like super smart, super funny. All we do is laugh and make each other laugh and kind of keep pushing each other, too. So, I think this thing reflects both of our greatest hits, maybe, to kind of put our sensibilities together and make this work. And I like collaborating with the actors, too. That's why I work with Ethan [Hawke]; he's a future actor, and I'm a future director, but at this moment, we're screenwriters, we're conjuring this movie together. I've done that with other actors, like I was saying. Ethan and Julie [Delpy], for instance, and Glen, such a great creative partner, just really fun."

Adria Arjona, most known for her role as Bix Caleen in Andor, plays Maddy Masters, the film's leading lady, and has received equally impressive reviews for her performance along with the undeniable instant chemistry between her and Powell that just seeps through the screen, which even director Richard Linklater couldn't help gush over.

The film also stars Austin Amelio (Everybody Wants Some!!), Retta (Parks and Recreation), comedian Sanjay Rao, Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures), Molly Bernard (Younger), and Mike Markoff in various supporting roles.

Who Is Making 'Hit Man'?

Hit Man is directed by Richard Linklater and is written by both Linklater and Glen Powell, who makes his screenwriting debut. Linklater is one of the finest American filmmakers of his generation and has made significant contributions to the canon of cinema, including celebrated classics such as the Before Trilogy and Boyhood.

With Hit Man, the acclaimed artist looks to experiment with something new and broaden his horizon. Linklater and Powell also serve as producers on the film along with Jason Bateman, Mike Blizzard, Connor Flanagan, and Mike Costigan.

Principal photography for the film began in October 2022, in New Orleans with cinematographer Shane F. Kelly, who has worked with Linklater since 2006's A Scanner Darkly, and production wrapped in November.

New Trailer for Doc 'H2: The Occupation Lab' About a Palestinian City
By Alex Billington
H2: The Occupation Lab Trailer
"As a Palestinian here, I don't exist." Film Movement has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled H2: The Occupation Lab, from filmmakers Idit Avrahami & Noam Sheizaf. It was originally made and finished in 2022 before the current Israel-Palestine war broke out. It premiered in 2022 at the Docaviv Film Festival in Israel, and will be relased in the US sometime this year. H2 is the name given to the eastern part of Hebron - the only Palestinian city with a Jewish settlement in it. Here, along a one-Kilometer road, lies the holy Tomb of the Patriarchs, where both Jews & Muslims believe their common father, Abraham, is buried. This is also where the massacre of 1929, known as "year zero" of the conflict, took place; where the Jewish settlement movement was born, and where the policy of ethnic separation was first implemented by the military. With rare archive footage as well as interviews with Hebron's military commanders and locals, H2: The Occupation Lab tells the story of a place that is both a microcosm of the entire conflict and a test site for the methods of control Israel is implementing throughout the West Bank. This is another honest, clear-eyed look at what's really going on in Palestine and how Israel occupation is the more serious danger.

Bonkers Full Trailer for Takashi Miike's 'Lumberjack the Monster' Film
By Alex Billington
Lumberjack the Monster Trailer
"If he's trying to murder me, I'll kill him first." Another official trailer is available to watch for this kooky and crazy Japanese horror film called Lumberjack the Monster, based on the novel of the same name. A suspenseful thriller directed by Takashi Miike and starring Kazuya Kamenashi. The brutal film is about a series of bizarre murders by someone wearing a strange monster mask found in the picture book 'Monster Woodcutter' who then steals their brains. Akira heads out to get revenge on this Lumberjack killer. The plot follows this Patrick Bateman-like psychopath lawyer (who also kills) going up against this vicious masked murderer - pitting a psychopath against a serial killer in a totally bonkers new Takashi Miike creation. Only someone like Miike could make something so absurd! Lumberjack the Monster stars Kazuya Kamenashi as Akira Ninomiya, Nanao, Riho Yoshioka, Shota Sometani, and Shido Nakamura. The film already opened in Japan last December, and it will premiere at a Japan Society event in NYC this May - but is still waiting for a US release eventually. Hopefully sooner than later. Scary Trailer for 'Trim Season' North Cali Marijuana Farm Horror Film
By Alex Billington
Trim Season Traler
"You'll never understand. If she wants to, Mona can control the whole mountain." Paper Street Pics has revealed the trailer for Trim Season, a horror thriller film set at a marijuana farm in Northern California. This trailer is dropping in time for 4/20 this wekend, but the film won't actually release until June in the summer. "The Ultimate Nightmare Blunt Rotation." A group of young people go to a remote marijuana farm where they hope to make quick cash during "trim season" - trimming marijuana at the end of the growing season. But they discover the location's dark secrets and now must try to escape the mountain on which they are trapped. It becomes a race against time for Emma and her friends to escape the dense woods with their lives. From the same director as Vide Noir, Trim Season stars Bethlehem Million as Emma, Jane Badler, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Alex Essoe, Ryan Donowho, Cory Hart, & Ally Ioannides. Aside from the freaky eco-horror concept, I really dig the poster they made for this (seen below). This looks terrifying! Watch out.

Petaluma Lycanthrope Comedy Film 'Werewolf Serenade' Official Trailer
By Alex Billington
Werewolf Serenade Trailer
"If you do have it, don't spread it." The first full trailer has debuted for an indie comedy called Werewolf Serenade, filmed in & around the city of Petaluma, California (same place as American Graffiti or Peggy Sue Got Married). The film is premiering in a few weeks at AVFest, and out later this year. It's a campy, low-budget indie dramedy about a middle-aged couple navigating the humorous challenges of transforming into a werewolf. When the burnt-out college professor Peter MacTire accidentally becomes a werewolf after his colleague turns up dead, he and his concert cellist wife Julia embrace the change to thwart an evil occultist plot, save the college, and their marriage. Hopefully. Starring writer / director Daedalus Howell as Peter, with Emily Keyishian, Mark P. Robinson, Alia Beeton, Christopher Sawyer, Rapheal Gavin, and Natalie Crafts. Yet another super low budget werewolf film, lots of them these days. Not exactly expecting this to win any prizes, but it does look like some small town kooky fun. Especially if you're into werewolves.

Official Trailer for 'In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon' Doc
By Alex Billington
In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon Trailer
"I want to go and follow the music, but you never know what you're going to find along the way." Another new official trailer has debuted for the documentary film titled In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, the latest from Alex Gibney following his docs on The Forever Prisoner, and Boris Becker. This first premiered at the 2023 Toronto & London Film Festivals last fall, and is already streaming on MGM+ in the US (though we missed this when it first dropped). The film follows Paul Simon inside the studio making his new album Seven Psalms while looking back on his six-decade career with countless musical peaks from Sounds of Silence to Graceland. Gibney's In Restless Dreams is supposedly the definitive musical biography of Paul Simon, one of the greatest songwriters (and performers as well) in the history of rock 'n roll. It's yet another one of these music docs that is a mix between promoting his new album he's been working on, and a quick look back at his entire career as a musician. He's got plenty of good stories to tell about music. Enjoy.

Cheerleader Squad Thriller 'Backspot' Trailer Feat. Evan Rachel Wood
By Alex Billington
Backspot Trailer
"This world is not kind to weak people." XYZ Films has revealed the trailer for a Canadian cheerleading film called Backspot, which plays more a serious drama or intense thriller than a sports comedy or satire. This is similar to that rowing film The Novice a few years ago. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year and hits US theaters in May. Devery Jacobs (from "Reservation Dogs") stars as Riley, who is given the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, Riley must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend, and also her desperate need for approval from her new coach. One positive review states: “You may think you know your sports movie tropes, but you’ve never seen them used quite this way — that is, within a queer cheerleading drama firmly focused on complex female characters — and Waterson’s Backspot delights in skewing such expectations." Dang, okay! This also stars Evan Rachel Wood as coach, Shannyn Sossamon, Kudakwashe Rutendo, Thomas Antony Olajide, and Wendy Crewson. It's also executive produced by Elliott Page. Check it out below.

Strange Trailer for Horror 'The Coffee Table' About Demonic Furniture
By Alex Billington
The Coffee Table Trailer
"Enjoy if you dare…" What crazy idea will they come up with next for a horror movie?! Try this on for size, why don't ya. Watch out for deadly tables! The Coffee Table is a Spanish horror film about, uh, some kind of haunted, killer furniture. Jesus and Maria are a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. Nevertheless, they have just become parents and are also struggling with the pressures of a newborn baby. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence and their lives forever. This indie horror was entirely shot over the course of 10 days. Starring David Pareja and Estefanía de los Santos, with Josep Maria Riera, Claudia Riera, and Eduardo Antuña. It's described as "an unsettling descent into absolute madness and misery," and also "uproariously funny until it is not at all." Well, this definitely sounds nuts! And looks much more weird and freaky than it does comedic.

A Record Store in NJ Inspires a Mid-Life Crisis in 'Flipside' Doc Trailer
By Alex Billington
Flipside Doc Trailer
"It's beautiful and inspiring." Oscilloscope Labs has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Flipside, which first premiered last year at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. It's the latest creation from doc filmmaker Chris Wilcha, who worked for "This American Life" and also made a few docs, including Knock Knock It's Tig Notaro in 2015 and his breakout The Target Shoots First. Flipside is his comical attempt to save a New Jersey record store and confront a mid-life crisis. TIFF adds: "In the process of looking back, he gets inspired to revisit the half-finished documentaries that exist only on his hard drives. He pulls up old interviews that no one has seen with creative people who faced their own crossroads, including radio host Ira Glass, writer Starlee Kine, jazz photographer Herman Leonard, and television writer David Milch. The passage of time brings a deeper poignancy to their testimonies… His quest may be personal, but many will see themselves in it." Seems like another super nerdy meta filmmaker film! Which I'm always curious about.

Nick Stahl Stars in a Twisted Chef Thriller 'What You Wish For' Trailer
By Alex Billington
What You Wish For Trailer
"A bad dish from you and your life will end." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for What You Wish For, an indie thriller from filmmaker Nicholas Tomnay, a follow-up to his first film The Perfect Host. This new one premiered at many genre fests: Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, FrightFest, A Night of Horror, Grimmfest, Celluloid Screams, and Screamfest previously before its upcoming release in theaters this May during the start of the summer. A down-on-his-luck chef with gambling problems flees to a Latin American villa, where he assumes the identity of another skilled chef. "A Hitchcockian, edge-of-your-seat descent into escalating moral compromise with generous servings of dark humour, shock, and surprise." The title is an obvious riff on the "be careful what you wish for" idiom, as the full synopsis hints that he "soon discovers just what Jack's been doing to maintain the lifestyle he so desperately craved." Uh oh. Starring Nick Stahl as Ryan, with Tamsin Topolski, Randy Vasquez, Penelope Mitchell, Juan Carlos Messier, Ariel Sierra, & Brian Groh. Yeah this looks crazy and unsettling. I dig that final line: "Make the dessert, Jack."

Must Watch Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's 'Trap' with Josh Hartnett
By Alex Billington
Shyamalan's Trap Movie Trailer
"This whole concert is a trap. They're watching all the exits." Get ready for a whole new twist! Warner Bros has revealed an official trailer for the next new M. Night Shyamalan movie titled Trap, arriving in theaters in August at the end of the summer. This was teased at CinemaCon last week, and we finally all get a look at the trailer. Josh Hartnett stars as a father who takes his daughter to a pop star concert (inspired by Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga). However, while there they discover that the concert is all a setup to catch a serial killer. But who is the killer? This first big twist is revealed IN the trailer, so it's not really a spoiler. I also have a feeling Shyamalan has worked in a few other big twists that we don't know about yet. The cast also includes Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan performing as Lady Raven, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill. With cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (of Call Me by Your Name) and a score by Herdĭs Stefănsdŏttir. Trap is a nice compliment to M. "Back when we were kings, masters of ourselves, masters of the world, free. Today, who are we?" Kino Lorber has revealed an official US trailer for Banel & Adama, a visually magical African love story movie from French filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition, and went on to play at the Toronto, London, Chicago, and Denver Film Festivals in 2023. It's now set for a US release starting in June this summer. Kino Lorber is pleased to present Banel & Adama, a haunting, visually stunning West African love story and the directorial debut of Ramata-Toulaye Sy. A young couple in Senegal must contend with the disapproval of their remote village. This stars Khady Mane as Banel and Mamadou Diallo as Adama. It received mostly positive reviews out of last year's film festivals, praising both the gorgeous cinematography and passionate performances from the two leads, which we get a glimpse of in this trailer. Glad it will be getting a proper art house theatrical run in the US soon. Take a look.
