Teaching mahouts (elephant keepers) to trim feet in Nepal

Elephants living in captivity do not get enough natural, self directed exercise. As result they need to have their nails and foot pads trimmed on a regular basis. Unfortunately mahouts in Asia seldom trim, resulting in overgrown and cracked nails and pads. This condition can lead to foot rot, infections and osteomyilitis, a captivity induced terminal disease. Elephant Aid International trains mahouts in proper foot care to improve the welfare of captive-held elephants.
