Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Head of the Ministry of Economy Robert Habeck visited Ukraine: in honor of the visit, the official announced plans to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine with additional air defense IRIS-T together with Helmut Rauch. Three systems have already been transferred to Ukraine, according to Bild.
“Three of our systems are already in Ukraine, and even more will be delivered this year. The next one is in just a few weeks,” he said.
In turn, Khabek expressed confidence that president Vladimir Putin will not limit himself to Ukraine: if he achieves success there, he will certainly continue the war with others.
“Therefore, it is important for our security and peace in Europe that Ukraine successfully defends itself and that we help it,” he explained.
The official clarified that Germany will support Ukraine as long as necessary.
Biid recalled that Habek’s arrival on a special train to Kyiv is his second official visit to Ukraine since the beginning of a full-scale war. Together with the Vice-Chancellor of Germany, the “father” of the Iris-T, Helmut Rauch, arrived in Ukraine. The latter heads the arms company Diehl Defense, which produces the mentioned anti-aircraft missile systems.
Germany has written to dozens of countries including Gulf Arab states to plead for more air defence systems for Ukraine, saying Kyiv needed urgent help to protect its cities, troops and critical infrastructure from the “murderous onslaught” of Russian missiles. In a letter to other Nato members, a copy of which was obtained by the Financial Times and confirmed by Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock and defence minister Boris Pistorius said they were launching a global initiative aimed at plugging the gaps in Ukraine’s air defences. A “wide range of non-Nato partners” had also been approached, they added. Officials declined to identify those countries. Baerbock and Pistorius said their initiative would primarily seek to procure more US-built Patriot systems for Ukraine as they had proven most effective against Russian ballistic missiles.
