If a tungsten rod was one foot in diameter and 20 feet long, or the size of a utility pole, it would weigh 18,855.7 lbs. If it was moving 7200 mph, or ten times the speed of sound it would impact with 43,303,300,000 joules. The atomic bomb at Hiroshima was appx. 63 terajoules (63,000,000,000,000 joules) and it is considered small by today's standards. You would need to drop 145 or 146 rods in one area to equal a small strategic nuke.

The destructive power of these weapons will be determined mostly by the type of terrain they are striking. If a marshy or sandy area with deep topsoil (like Louisiana or Florida in US) were to be targeted then you can imagine a shallow crater would form on the surface but most of the energy would be spent below ground and the rod would just burrow itself hundreds of feet deep. The only area where it could inflict real surface damage would be if it targeted rocky terrain with shallow bedrock, so that there was something dense to contain most of the energy near the surface and for it to be released there.
