I needed the compassion. I already had beat myself up so much in life as a 13-15 year old growing up and never having been shown love by my parents, and hurt by friends. I already knew right from wrong and thought why would God love me? Nobody else does. And would hurt myself daily (not in front of people to get attention) and cry daily for God to help me. God showing me His goodness by sending someone 3,000 miles away to leave a gospel tract at our house and being convicted of the Holy Spirit and 6 months later God saving me in a Pentecostal church and starting soul winning in 1984/1985 without being coerced to do it, was a miracle of God. Yes... the law of God is good but so many today are not giving the love of Christ with it and sound like Pharisees on the streets or say you have to be one of the elect and you better hope you are one of the lucky ones... or there is no hope.
Glad you were found of Jesus. I wasn’t shiny either. I was all messed up. I was scum of the Earth that was made fun of and lied about. Satan wanted me dead as a young person. The Pentecostal churches in those days in the mid-80’s were evangelizing like no other denominations but sadly mainly within its own walls. At least they were doing that back then. I always had to ask myself if all these Baptists, and reformed and people like that were so full of God, why did God have to send someone from 3,000 miles away to leave gospel tract/s? Tons of churches in town but nobody ever came to our house to share the gospel with our family, or said anything to us in school.
I have come to the conclusion that only about 2% of professing Christians really are sold out to God in America. I literally bawled myself to sleep every night as that young man for like 2 hours crying out to God. I didn’t know He loved me. Two years of that. I became an agnostic. There is an old Christian rock group named Petra, they wrote a song called “For Annie”. That was me. Every preacher in America should listen to that if they can handle it. They will know then and there if they have a true heart for the lost. It is more convicting than Charles Spurgeon’s cliche’s that we all quote, not that he didn’t say some true things, but we forget the broken-hearted and the unloved... but Jesus made them a priority and always renounced the religious that didn’t have much love in their hearts. We forget the God is love part. I had a friend that got so into using the law in his preaching he ended up getting into a cult called Hebrew Roots and quit evangelizing all together. So many people on the streets are blatantly just calling people “wicked sinners” in a very unkind way. You can cut off a person’s ear before giving them the gospel and they just are going to think all Christians are that way. Needless offending is not good. There needs to be balance, law is fine but without the love of God, how will that other half be reached?
