"I don't want an empty nest!" Music Box Films has posted their official trailer for an indie drama about a family titled Relative, from filmmaker Michael Glover Smith. This originally premiered back in 2022, but we have only caught up with it now and haven't ever posted about this film before. It played at a few small film festivals in 2022/2023, with a very limited release in art house theaters around the country. As various members of the Frank family come together for a college graduation party in Chicago, they find their bonds being tested, and strengthened, in surprising ways. The story focuses on the parents of four kids, who decide to announce that they're about to sell the house they grew up in. "Relative is a warm blend of comedy and drama about a modern American family." This stars Wendy Robie, Francis Guinan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Clare Cooney, Keith D. Gallagher, Emily Lape, Melissa DuPrey, and Elizabeth Stam. The review quoted all over this marketing says that it's an "impeccably cast [and] superbly directed" film from Chicago. A handful of unknown actors might actually give great performances in an indie flick like this.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Glover Smith's film Relative, direct from YouTube:

Relative Poster

David & Karen Frank (Francis Guinan & Wendy Robie) are retirement-age progressive activists & parents who have lived in the same Victorian home on the north side of Chicago for 30 years. It's the house their children grew up and where two of them, Benji (Cameron Scott Roberts) & Rod (Keith D. Gallagher), still live. On the eve of Benji’s college graduation, daughters Evonne (Clare Cooney) & Norma (Emily Lape) return from out-of-state for a weekend celebration. Evonne brings her daughter, and newly separated wife; Norma is alone, with thoughts of wasted potential as she reconsiders her life; Rod, an unemployed burnout, pines for his ex who left years ago; and all Benji wants to do is escape the party to rendezvous with a free-spirited actress he met the night prior. As David & Karen announce the potential sale of their home, each member of the Frank family finds their bonds with the others being tested and strengthened in many surprising ways. Relative is a warm blend of comedy and drama about a modern American family.

Relative is both written and directed by American indie filmmaker Michael Glover Smith, director of the indie films Cool Apocalypse, Mercury in Retrograde, and Rendezvous in Chicago previously, plus other short films. Produced by Clare Cooney & Aaron Wertheimer. This initially premiered at the 2022 Gasparilla Film Festival, and a few other small festivals that same year. The film was first released in select US theaters last year. Music Box Films is handling the US release of Relative - for more info, visit the film's official site.

"Can you imagine to be remembered like that?" Max has unveiled the first real teaser trailer for the spin-off series The Penguin, set to debut in the fall this year. This streaming series will follow the transformation of Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot from a disfigured nobody to the noted Gotham gangster, after the events of The Batman movie. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell returns from The Batman (loved him in it) as Oz, bringing us his full transformation into the infamous DC Comics villain who gives Batman quite a fright. The first episodes are being directed by Craig Zobel (of Compliance, Z for Zachariah, The Hunt) who seems like a perfect choice for this. We featured an early production teaser last year. The full ensemble cast also has Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown, Michael Zegen, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Deirdre O'Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, and François Chau. Ohhhhhhh this looks SO damn good. What a killer teaser. Perfect setup, the way it all plays out, his dialogue, it's all so dark. This is going to be worth the wait. Check it out + stay tuned for more.

Netflix Trailer for 'Baby Reindeer' Awkward Stalker Dark Comedy Series
By Alex Billington
Baby Reindeer Series Trailer
"Martha can you let go of my hand now, please??" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy series titled Baby Reindeer, arriving for streaming on Netflix starting in early April. The series is created and written by the Scottish comedian & actor Richard Gadd, telling his own story once again. This story about his stalker and his relationship with her was already turned into a play that he debuted at Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago. Now it's being turned into a Netflix series, expanded into eight 30-minute episodes. In Baby Reindeer, when a struggling comedian shows an act of kindness to a vulnerable woman stalking him, it sparks a suffocating obsession which threatens to wreck both their lives. Starring Richard Gadd as Donny Dunn, along with Jessica Gunning as Martha, Danny Kirrane as Gino, Nava Mau as Teri, plus Hugh Coles, Tom Goodman-Hill, Jamie Michie, and Chloe Driver. Well, well, this looks damn good! An impressive dark comedy twist on a very uncomfortable, unsettling real life situation. This is worth a look.

Christine Roche Stars in Alien Planet Sci-Fi Indie Film 'Light' Trailer
By Alex Billington
Light Trailer
"It comes for the light! It comes for the light!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film from the UK titled Light, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Matt Woollard. It's set to open next week on VOD in the US & Canada if anyone wants to give it a look. "Sometimes it's better to be in the dark." Survivors from an interstellar transport ship accident have to work together after crash landing on an inhospitable planet. Woollard explains that he was inspired partially by A Quiet Place: "the idea of doing for light what they did for sound" with this crew trying to figure out what happened and how to survive on this mysterious alien planet. Light stars Christine Roche, Gia Lily, Tedroy Newell, and James Woollard as the boy, plus Anna Swan. For a super low budget sci-fi film, this actually looks good. The gigantic light creatures are crazy cool. I'm curious to see how this film plays out - yep I'll be watching. Check it out below.

First Teaser for 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Sequel with Michael Keaton
By Alex Billington
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Teaser Trailer
"The juice is loose!" He's back!! Warner Bros has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the legacy sequel titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, reuniting mastermind filmmaker Tim Burton with actor Michael Keaton for a long-awaited follow-up 36 (!!) years later. Long enough? Did anyone see the original in theaters? The first Beetlejuice movie opened in 1988 (right before Burton's Batman in 1989) and ended up as a modest success and cult favorite for many fans. The sequel continues the story with the very same family. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. Michael Keaton returns as Betelgeuse again, along with Winona Ryder back as Lydia Deetz, plus a cast including Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Catherine O'Hara, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Arthur Conti, Burn Gorman, and Filipe Cates; plus Willem Dafoe as a ghost detective who, in his life, was a B movie action star. Barely 60 seconds of footage in this! I'll wait to see more – for now this is an amusing re-introduction.

Elisabeth Moss in Truth & Lies Thriller Series 'The Veil' Official Trailer
By Alex Billington
The Veil Series Trailer
"I've played so many people in my life, I don't know where I belong anymore…" Hulu has revealed the official trailer for a new mystery thriller series titled The Veil, an FX Production arriving for streaming this spring on FX on Hulu. Created and written by Steven Knight ("Peaky Blinders", "See", "Great Expectations", "All the Light We Cannot See"). Starring Elisabeth Moss as a double agent of sorts, The Veil is a new spy thriller that explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. In the shadows, the CIA and French DGSE must work together to avert potential disaster. One of them posses a secret which the other needs to expose – they're very vague about any other details beyond this, even in the trailer. In addition to Moss, the series features Yumna Marwan, Dali Benssalah, Haluk Bilginer, and Josh Charles. This looks like Elisabeth Moss is Jason Bourne in a new Hulu series about a complicated spy who knows too much. Might be good? Or it might not.

Population Control Satire Film 'Humane' Trailer Featuring Jay Baruchel
By Alex Billington
Humane Trailer
"We are engaged in a life or death struggle against our own extinction." Oh oh what do we have here?? IFC Films + Shudder have revealed the first official trailer for Humane, marking the feature directorial debut of Canadian photographer Caitlin Cronenberg. Yet another Cronenbrg getting into making horror films - yes she's the daughter of David Cronenberg, and brother of fellow filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Humane is a chilling dystopian satire opening in theaters first this April before it's streaming on Shudder in the summer. In the wake of a catastrophic environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population (are we headed here?), a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father's plan to enlist in the government's new euthanasia program goes horribly awry. Set over one night at this home. The film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, with Alanna Bale, and Sirena Gulamgaus. This looks like a very spicy thriller that will stir up some big conversations, and I like that it has a kooky satirical vibe. Also reminds me of the British sci-fi film Silent Night from a few years ago.

Cheesy Crime Thriller 'Deadly Justice' Trailer Starring Kelly Sullivan
By Alex Billington
Deadly Justice Trailer
"There's a person you know who is not who they say they are." Who?! Who could it be?? Level 33 Ent. has debuted an official trailer for a very cheesy crime thriller titled Deadly Justice, made by filmmaker Karyn Klein, from a screenplay written by actor Corin Nemec. This film is set for a VOD debut in April, though this really looks like made-for-TV junk. A successful female prosecutor who put away a prominent but corrupt Judge, has her life and business turned upside down by a murderous stalker after appearing on a true crime show to discuss the case. He is convinced that Judge Halstead is an innocent man and becomes hellbent on putting Holly away for good. The movie stars Kelly Sullivan, Brian Krause, Corin Nemec, Christiana Leucas, Jason London, and Marco St. John. That super specific final scene from the trailer makes me wonder if it's actually the TV show host who is behind all of this? Probably. The rest of this looks pretty bad.

Watch: Comedy Short 'Jimmy Boden' - Snack Size Tester Breaks Down
By Alex Billington
Jimmy Boden Short Film
"That's 8. Mark it down. Let's continue…" Have you ever looked at a bag of snacks and wondered, how do they come up with the "serving size" count on the nutrition label? There is technically a real answer to this question, but I like the concept in this short much more. Jimmy Boden is a clever short made by a young filmmaker named Chris Pickering. After premiering at the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival and playing at other fests last year, it's available to watch online. An imprisoned government asset, whose sole purpose is determining the serving sizes of snacks, has finally reached his breaking point. "I came up with the idea for Jimmy Boden as I was eating a bag of chips. I looked at the back and noticed the serving size: seven chips. Who ever just eats seven chips?" Indeed. Pickering's friend Andrew Simmons stars as Jimmy. They really got this just right - from the slick set design to the snack "props" to Jimmy's hilarious performance. Aced it.
