In the trailer for Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway portrays a 40-year-old single mom who gets to live out a teenage girl’s dream: embarking on a whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of the world’s hottest boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The R-rated film will stream globally on Prime Video starting May 2.

After the couple meet backstage at Coachella, they kindle a steamy relationship. As Hayes (Galitzine) plays Solène (Hathaway) a song on the piano, he grips her thigh. “I’m too old for you,” she insists, before he pulls her in for a kiss: “No you’re not.”

The couple is seen navigating paparazzi while embarking on romantic outings, causing Hathaway’s character to ask, “What about what people will say?” — to which Galitzine responds, “I don’t care what they say.” The trailer features the debut single from the film’s soundtrack, “Dance Before We Walk,” which is also out now.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name from Robinne Lee, the plot kicks off with Solène’s husband, played by Reid Scott, choosing to end their marriage — which means canceling his Coachella trip with their 16-year-old daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin). At the festival, Solène crosses paths with Hayes Campbell, the frontman of popular band August Moon, who is said to be based on Harry Styles. As an unexpected romance begins between the two, Solène must balance her career, her obligations to her teenage daughter and the 24-hour news cycle surrounding her relationship.

In an interview with Vogue in 2020, Lee was asked if the novel was inspired by Styles, to which she responded, “Inspired is a strong word.” However, Lee said “the seed was planted” after researching One Direction in 2017 and discovering that Styles often dated older women. She also noticed how scenes she had written would eerily play out in Styles’ life. For instance, after writing a scene in which the paparazzi catch Soléne and Hayes in a compromising position on a yacht, similar photos of Styles and Kendall Jenner were released.

Michael Showalter directs the film from a script by Jennifer Westfeldt, who will also executive produce. Producers include Cathy Schulman via her Welle Entertainment label, Gabrielle Union through her I’ll Have Another banner, Hathaway via her Somewhere Pictures label, Lee, Eric Hayes, Showalter and Jordana Mollick. Kian Gass of I’ll Have Another will also executive produce.

Other cast members include Annie Mumolo, Perry Mattfeld and Jordan Aaron Hall. Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham, Vik White and Dakota Adan portray the remaining August Moon members.

The film is comprised of a number of Oscar winners, including Hathaway for her role as Fantine in 2013’s “Les Misérables,” Mumolo for co-writing “Bridesmaids” and Schulman for producing best picture winner “Crash.”

Prime Video has dropped the trailer for The Idea of You, the upcoming romantic dramedy starring Anne Hathaway as a 40-year-old single mom who embarks on an unlikely romance with a 24-year-old boy band star (played by Red, White & Royal Blue‘s Nicholas Galitzine). The pic will close the South by Southwest festival on March 16.

With the line “We met at Coachella” destined to be some sort of rom-com classic, the movie, based on Robinne Lee’s novel, follows Solène (Hathaway), whose husband (Reid Scott) walks out on the marriage just when the couple’s 16-year-old daughter (Ella Rubin) has her heart set on attending the Coachella music fest. Mom steps in to save the day and the trip.

Producing are Cathy Schulman — who returns to SXSW after premiering Bernie there in 2012 — via her Welle Entertainment label, Gabrielle Union through her I’ll Have Another banner, Hathaway via her Somewhere Pictures label, Lee, Eric Hayes, Showalter and Jordana Mollick. Kian Gass of I’ll Have Another will also executive produce.

The film, rated R, streams globally on Prime Video starting May 2.

On Wednesday, Prime Video debuted the first trailer for The Idea of You, an adaptation of author Robinne Lee's 2017 novel of the same name.

According to a synopsis, "When Solène (Hathaway, 41) must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes Campbell (Galitzine, 29) and there is an instant, undeniable spark."

"As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for."

The book and its movie adaptation has received considerable attention from fans who liken the character Galitzine plays, Hayes, to Harry Styles in his One Direction days.

The Idea of You's author Lee has dispelled the idea that the character is directly based on Styles in recent years, though.

"This was never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles,” she told Vogue in 2020. “It was supposed to be a story about a woman approaching 40 and reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself, just at the point that society traditionally writes women off as desirable and viable and whole.”

The Idea of You is co-written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Michael Showalter from Lee's novel. Showalter, known for 2017's The Big Sick and 2021's The Eyes of Tammy Faye, is directing the movie.

Aside from Hathaway and Galitzine, the movie also stars Ella Rubin, Reid Scott, Annie Mumolo, Viktor White, Raymond Cham, Jaiden Anthony and Dakota Adan.
