Lake Alice in Manawatu adjoined an Adult Maximum Security Unit. The Child, Adolescent Psych Unit was opened in 1972. Over a period of 6 years admitted approx.., 450 children and adolescents. Admission stopped in 1978, Lake Alice finally closed it doors stopped operating in 1980. It was reported, that the majority of children admitted to lake Alice Psych Unit did not in fact have a mental illness, they were admitted by Social Welfare (Govt Agency) because of so called ‘Behavioral Problems’

Children having to administer the electric shocks to other children. Survivors repeatedly telling the Royal Commission of Inquiry of urinating, defecating in anticipation of the terror, of screaming in pain, hearing the screams of other children , often so scared they soiled themselves.

Dr. Oliver Sutherland was the first to lay a complaint to the NZ Police in 1977 about the children receiving electric chocks at Lake Alice. After advice from a senior psychiatrist they decided not to lay charges. Then decades of delay went by. 46 years of repeated allegation of the horrific abuse, torture of Children and Adolescents at the Lake Alice Psych., unit NZ Police failure to act. Multiple State Agencies failures to act, to protect these children. No-one was held accountable.

There were allegations of sexual abuse, homophobic behaviors. Court documents recorded how boys were injected with this painful drug that immobilized them for reasons such as ‘running away’ or ‘being smart’, laughing too much, having a joke with friends etc., Former patients of Lake Alice remembered the drug being injected ‘Paraldehyde. Children stripped naked, put in cells at the end of dorms for days with only a bucket to pee in, a tin of food and no blankets

This is abhorrent, how harshly these survivors of Mount Alice have been so unjustly treated. The evidence of these horrific events on the 1970’s at Lake Alice have clear evidence, where children and teens were severely punished, tortured. 24/6/ 2023 RNZ reported how survivors are angered some of these survivors are that not one person whom committed these inhumane notorious crimes against children has ever been convicted

$132 million was put aside in the Jenny Shipley Budget in 1999 tor legal help for these survivors only $13 million has been shared out between 200 survivors of Lake Alice. Where did the rest of the money go.. you may well ask..it seems there is no answer to this question.

There is a walk through exhibition with panels of photo’s and video’s. This is a special exhibition on the atrocities that occurred in the 1970’s at Lake Alice Psych Hospital where children and adolescents were severely punished and even tortured. This exhibition is open until 27th April, 155 Broadway, Newmarket. No charge a free entry. Open every day 10 – 6pm and late nights Thursday and Friday. Some scenes, images may be disturbing

The NZ Independent watchdog Citizens Human Rights Commission helped Paul Zentveld with his UN Claim, and has investigated Lake Alice since 1976. The Commissions Direct Mike Ferris said “Survivors have been through the ringer its evidential they have been seriously mistreated, they deserve compensation”. Treasury (Govt) had earmarked $132 million to resolve legal costs for the survivors of Lake Alice.

Crown Law inquiries found that under Jenny Shipley’s 1999 government they identified in the Budget Economic and Fiscal Update that indeed this was the case. However under Helen Clark’s Labour led government tens of thousands of dollars were eaten up by legal fee’s. There has been no resolve as to where the rest of this $119 million dollars has disappeared too. The money may have disappeared by the trauma has not for many survivors of Lake Alice.

Survivors have needed professional services for rehabilitation, having unresolved mental health, emotional, physical and medical issues, health problems. Many struggling with personal and family relationships. They have been revictimized over the years through State agencies themselves. Some even living in cars and temporary accommodation. The Crown had worn down lawyers and only paid survivors a fraction. Even some ACC applications were refused

As Paul Zentveld stated “the government have an obligation to pay these survivors compensation for their sufferance under State care at Lake Alice Psych Unit for Children and Adolescents. Majority of these children had no mental health issue, but were reported have behavioral issues. New Zealand signed the UN Torture Convention in 1947 therefore the survivors of Lake Alice must be given all the help they need.

The State have seriously, severely unjustly revictimized an retraumatized many of these survivors, have not judicially acknowledge that those that committed these crimes have been criminalized in a NZ Court of law

Please share this far and wide. What I heard and saw at the Lake Alice Exhibition was heart wrenching. As I followed up with much research I was even more appalled and horrified the way these children, adolescents were severely abused and tortured.
