Senators John Kennedy and Ted Cruz, who are both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have aligned with their Republican peers in calling on Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to ensure a fair and thorough trial in the Senate regarding the impeachment articles against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The House of Representatives has impeached Mayorkas for "high crimes and misdemeanors," as outlined in two impeachment articles.
The U.S. Constitution mandates in Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 that the Senate has the sole a
uthority to "try all Impeachments." In light of some Senate Democrats' potential plans to either dismiss or set aside these impeachment charges, Senator Kennedy voiced his dismay, arguing that there's no positive way to interpret Senator Schumer's strategies, as they seem to ignore the investigative efforts of the House and the enduring principles of U.S. governance.
