Gróttasöngr (The Lay of Grótti/The Mill's Song) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Gróttasöngr consists of a dialogue between the dwarf-made millstone, Grótti, and the god Thor. The poem primarily focuses on Thor's return from a journey, during which he encounters a giant named Hymir.

Thor arrives at Hymir's hall, seeking to obtain a cauldron large enough for brewing ale for the gods. Hymir, initially reluctant, agrees to accompany Thor on a fishing trip to fetch a suitable cauldron. Thor, eager to prove his strength, splits Hymir's head open with a blow from his hammer, Mjölnir, causing giant sea serpents to rise to the surface.

Thor engages in a fierce battle with the sea serpents, ultimately killing them and obtaining the cauldron. On their return journey, Thor and Hymir encounter the giantess Grótt, who serves as a personification of the grindstone. Grótti sings a lament, expressing sorrow for Thor's deed in killing the sea serpents.

The poem concludes with Thor returning to the hall of the gods, showcasing his victorious and heroic achievements. Gróttasöngr explores themes of strength, heroism, and the might of the thunder god Thor in his quest for powerful artifacts.

Analysis of Gróttasöngr involves understanding its place within Norse mythology and its connection to other tales featuring Thor. The poem reflects the emphasis on physical prowess and the challenges faced by the gods in acquiring essential items for their realm. The personification of Grótti and her lament adds a poetic and mythic layer to the narrative, highlighting the interconnectedness of various elements in the Norse cosmos.
