In the realm of national security and surveillance, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and the Patriot Act have been subjects of contentious debate. FISA, enacted in 1978, was initially designed to regulate surveillance activities against foreign powers and agents. However, over the years, it has expanded in scope, granting extensive powers to government agencies such as the NSA to conduct surveillance without adequate oversight leading to outright exploitation and the targeting of American citizens as well as their data. Similarly, the Patriot Act, hastily passed in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, aimed to enhance national security by expanding the authority of law enforcement agencies to track and combat terrorism. Yet, it has been criticized for its erosion of civil liberties and privacy rights, allowing for warrantless wiretapping, data collection, and other intrusive measures. In the end they are effectively two wings of the same bird.
