“The attorney general of New York knew that Trump’s property values were inflated because when it came time to pay taxes, Trump undervalued the very same properties,” Stewart added. “It was all part of a very specific real estate practice known as lying.”

But it didn’t take long for internet sleuths to look into Stewart’s own property history, which shows his New York City penthouse sold for 829% more than its assessed value, records confirmed by The Post reveal.

In 2014, Stewart sold his 6,280-square-foot Tribeca duplex to financier Parag Pande for $17.5 million.

The property’s asking price at that time is not available in listing records.

But according to 2013-2014 assessor records obtained by The Post, the property had the estimated market-value at only $1.882 million.

The actual assessor valuation was even lower, at $847,174.

Records also show that Stewart paid significantly lower property taxes, which were calculated based on that assessor valuation price — precisely what he called Trump out for doing in his Monday monologue.

Pande, who purchased the penthouse from Stewart, then resold the property at a nearly 26% loss, according to the Real Deal — at just over $13 million — in 2021.

Timothy Pool, a political commentator known for more right-leaning views, alleged on X that Stewart was being a hypocrite.

“Did @jonstewart commit fraud when he sold his penthouse for $17.5M? NY listed its market value at $1.8M an AV at around 800k… Who did he defraud?? I am SHOCKED,” he wrote.

“This is right in [Letitia James’] jurisdiction! I look forward to the grand jury indictment,” a user quipped in response to the tweet.

Stewart’s reps did not respond to The Post’s request for comment, but the comedian tweeted Wednesday evening: “OMG!! I’ve been caught doing something not remotely similar to Trump! Meanwhile, the New York assessor valuation on Stewart’s former penthouse is the exact same citation method and metric that New York Attorney General Letitia James used to value Trump’s private and personal properties, and then sued him for inflating those assets.

Market value was not considered throughout Trump’s case.

This includes Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, known as his main residence, which was assessed at only $18 million at the time.

Real estate brokers had valued the property at 50 times more than that amount.

Same for his private 200-acre New York family estate in Westchester, which was assessed between $30 million and $56 million. Trump had valued the property, known as Seven Springs, at $261 million.

The difference between Stewart and Trump’s cases is that a judge ruled that Trump sometimes exaggerated to lenders about how big his properties were, including the square footage of his Trump Tower apartment. Last month, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay $355 million — and temporarily banned him from doing business in the state — relying heavily on the assessed valuations of the properties to determine the ruling.

The $454 million bond to appeal the ruling marks the highest bond ever recorded in United States history against a single individual.

The comedian did nothing illegal by selling his penthouse for more than market value, but social media users were quick to mention that James go after Stewart, like she did with Trump for inflating his assets.

James filed a lawsuit against Trump in September 2022, accusing him, his two adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, The Trump Organization and two firm executives, Allen Weisselberg and Jeff McConney, of fraudulently overvaluing assets to secure more favorable bank loans and taxation deals.

Last month, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay $355 million, plus interest, and barred him from doing business in New York for three years after finding him liable for fraud.

Representative Mike Collins, a Georgia Republican, posted on X, formerly Twitter, "Look forward to Letitia James sending the NYPD to haul Jon Stewart to jail and seize his property."

Conservative radio host Andrew Wilkow shared Wednesday's article from the Post and wrote: "Paging Letitia James."

Trump, the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee, has claimed that he did nothing wrong, and the case is politically motivated. He has appealed Engoron's ruling.

When Engoron gave his ruling, James posted on X: "Today, justice has been served. This is a major win for everyone who believes that we must all play by the same rules. No matter how big, how rich, or how powerful you are, no one is above the law. Not even Donald Trump."

On Monday, when Trump's $454 bond was due, an appeals court reduced the amount to $175 million and gave him 10 additional days to pay it. The other defendants in the fraud case have faced their own penalties.

Stewart ripped into the former president during Monday night's show, blasting news reports that described the asset inflation as a "victimless crime."

"Well, that's because you're a f****** idiot," he joked, before cutting to press coverage of the trial.

The montage included recent clips from Fox News, where several hosts and contributors said there are "no victims" in Trump's New York civil fraud case.

The segment also included a recent CNN interview with Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary, in which the Canadian businessman claimed the ruling "didn't go over well with the investment community."

"We're all asking each other, who's next?" O'Leary said in the footage.

In response, Stewart quipped: "Ah, who's next? The persecuted minority of the investment community," before dubbing O'Leary an "a******."

Next came a reel of Shark Tank clips, in which O'Leary slams entrepreneurs for seemingly overvaluing their business.

The end of Trump’s fraud trial marked the closing of the New York attorney general’s highest-profile case to date. Though a team of lawyers from her office led the case, James has been the public face of the trial since its start. Sitting behind Trump in court and sometimes casting meme-worthy, incredulous looks at Trump and his team, she has inevitably become a target of his vitriol inside and outside the courtroom.

James kept her comments on the trial brief, posting summaries of the trial’s happenings each week on social media and sometimes offering comments outside the courthouse. On the last day of the trial, long after Trump had left the courthouse after delivering a bizarre closing statement, James told reporters: “The personal attacks don’t really bother me.”

On Friday, James was given a stunning victory. The judge overseeing the case, Arthur Engoron, handed her almost everything she had asked for. Trump was fined more than $350m plus pre-judgment interest and he and his eldest sons were banned from doing business in New York for years.

“Today, justice has been served. This is a tremendous victory for this state, this nation and for everyone who believes that we all must play by the same rules – even former presidents,” James said in a statement. “For years, Donald Trump engaged in massive fraud to falsely inflate his net worth and unjustly enrich himself, his family and his organization.

“Now, Donald Trump is finally facing accountability for his lying, cheating and staggering fraud. Because no matter how big, rich or powerful you think you are, no one is above the law.”

It is an argument that James campaigned on when she ran for the attorney general seat in 2018. At the time, the position was embroiled in scandal following abuse accusations against the former attorney general, Eric Schneiderman.

Raised in Brooklyn with her seven siblings, James attended public schools before getting her law degree at Howard University in Washington DC. She rose through the ranks as a public defender before entering New York politics as a councilmember and then as public advocate, the first Black woman to hold the watchdog role and one where she filed a record number of suits on behalf of people with disabilities, seniors and tenants.

When she won the attorney general’s office, another first for a Black woman, James vowed to “take that power back” from corporations and corrupt politicians.

“The law is the great equalizer and the biggest pillar of our democracy,” she said in her inaugural speech in 2019. “I will shine a light into the murkiest of swamps and act as a steward of justice.”

Even as Trump’s fraud trial comes to an end, James is pursuing other high-profile cases, including a civil case against top officials of the National Rifle Association (NRA). James has accused them of violating non-profit law by using NRA funds for their personal benefit.

The case could ultimately see the dissolution of the once-powerful gun lobbying group. Wayne LaPierre, the longtime NRA president at the center of the case, resigned in early January before the trial began, in what James said in a statement was an “important victory” for the case.

James has also found rivals in the Catholic church, which she has sued for mishandling child sexual abuse, and the NYPD over its treatment of Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020. James also filed a lawsuit against Pepsi in November over its single-use plastic polluting the Buffalo River in New York, teeing up a major environmental lawsuit against the beverage company, which is based in New York.

Critics of James – a longtime New York City councilwoman before she became the state’s attorney general – are usually political or legal opponents like Trump, and have tried to paint her as an opportunist who uses her office to grab national attention.

When James investigated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, once an ally, for sexual assault, Cuomo accused her of using the investigation for political motives.

“There are many agendas and there are many motivations at play,” Cuomo said during his farewell address in August 2021, after James’ investigation found that he had sexually assaulted 11 women.

When it came to Trump’s trial, he lobbed similar accusations against James, saying inside and outside the courtroom that she was conducting a “witch-hunt” in pursuing her own political agenda.

“She’s a political hack, and this is a disgrace that a case like this is going on,” Trump said during one of the untethered rants he made on the witness stand in November. “This is a political witch-hunt, and I think she should be ashamed of herself.”

Serving as a state attorney general is seen as a good launching point for a shot into a state’s governor’s mansion. James briefly ran for governor in 2021, a campaign that lasted only six weeks. She dropped out of the race when it became clear that much of the state’s Democratic party stood behind Kathy Hochul, the lieutenant governor who replaced Cuomo after he resigned.

When James dropped out of the race, she said she had to “continue my work as attorney general”. At the time, her office was well underway in its investigation into the Trump Organization’s finances.

“There are a number of important investigations and cases that are underway and I intend to finish the job,” James said.

It is unclear what specific ambition James has for her future, especially given that there are no term limits on New York’s governor or its attorney general.

While James has positioned herself as an ally to Hochul, who is seen as a more moderate Democrat, she has distanced herself from the governor on some issues. In August, James took the unusual step of declining to represent Hochul over the handling of migrants who were being brought to the state. Hochul was focused on requiring only New York City to house migrants, a requirement James said she believed applied to the whole state.

For now, James has continued to emphasize that her focus is on the cases in her office. It involves a grand old building on Fifth Avenue, an unpaid loan, a fading family dynasty, a James Joyce theatrical production which almost ended in fisticuffs, and hypocrisy from the AG as obvious as a glass of green beer.

It all began when James Doyle, a wealthy Georgia businessman with a love of his Irish roots, joined the board of the nonprofit society, whose crown jewel is a rare Gilded Age mansion at 991 Fifth Ave., right across from Central Park and the Met.

However, the society only made a few payments and Doyle soon found things weren’t quite as they seemed.

The society had been dominated for half a century by the Cahill family, and president emeritus Dr. Kevin Cahill was accused of treating the townhouse as his own “private club,” with one of his four sons, Christopher, becoming its “well-compensated executive director,” according to the New York Times. Christopher earned $88,459 in 2020, and between $134,768 and $179,402 in previous years, according to IRS returns.

On Monday's episode of "The Daily Show," Stewart mocked Trump's inability to come up with the money as New York Attorney General Letitia James threatens to seize his assets.

"RIP the Trump Organization. It died as it lived — fraudulently," he said. Saving a confetti blaster since 2016, Stewart popped open the canister with a grin. Despite the early celebration, Stewart was let down due to an appeals courts giving the former president a 10-day extension to pay the debt or post a bond, which was reduced to $175 million.

Stewart explained that Trump is now paying this penalty he would inflate the size of his real estate to secure favorable loan deals but when it came time to pay taxes, the former president "undervalued the very same properties."

"It was all a part of a very sophisticated real estate practice known as lying," he said. However, media pundits from Fox News' Sean Hannity to "Shark Tank" judge Kevin O’Leary saw the fraud as a "victimless crime."

"Who's next?" O'Leary questioned, suggesting the government would come after other real estate developers.

"Ah 'who's next?' The persecuted minority of the investment community," Stewart joked. "But I am surprised to hear this from Kevin O'Leary, a guy who is such an a*****e that the other people on 'Shark Tank' think he's an a*****e."

In another clip, O'Leary was told that Trump was found liable for falsifying business records, issuing false financial statements, insurance fraud, and conspiracy. But in response, O'Leary said “Everything that you just listed off is done by every real estate developer everywhere on Earth in every city. This has never been prosecuted.”

O'Leary's statement set off Stewart: “I don’t know if you know this, but most people just can’t commit fraud and expect to face no repercussions, even if everyone’s doing it."

He continued to explain fraud committed by struggling working-class Americans.

"Try getting a car loan by saying you have ten times as much money as you really do. Or claim 20 dependents when you have no children. Or say you make slightly less money to qualify for food assistance. I will guarantee you, there are not just financial consequences for those lies, but criminal ones,” he said.

“But don’t tell that to the investment community, because in their minds, in pursuit of profit, there is no rule that cannot be bent, there is no principle that cannot be undercut, as long as you and your f******g friends make money," Stewart said. "Apparently, the only immoral practice in the capitalist system is to use that money for people who may need it.” “Stealing is only justified when you already have too much,” he strongly stated.

"There does seem to be bipartisan agreement that the border is a problem now. There were 300,000 crossings in December alone. That's an all-time high and that is not sustainable," Stewart said. "But Republicans turned down the chance to pass a strong border bill supported by the Border Patrol Union because of how confident they are that fearmongering will be an effective election year strategy. It's all about branding."

In typical fashion, the Republican frontrunner, Donald Trump, has put the responsibility and blame onto President Joe Biden, saying, "We will call it from on 'Biden migrant crime.' It's 'bigrant crime' . . . That's smart, bigrant crime."

Stewart then joked, "I'm not completely sold on bigrant. It really just sounds like a migrant who's open to crossing either border." He continued, "Look there are some undocumented migrants who are committing crimes, some of them horrific. But isn't that true for every demographic? I feel pretty confident there's still a lot of opportunity out there for our American homegrown criminals."

However, this hot topic voter issue in American politics in a crucial election year has motivated both Biden and Trump to head to the border. "It was B***h-ass Cassidy versus the Sundown Kid. And Biden was fired up." Stewart said.

Over the weekend, Biden flew to Brownsville, Texas to campaign and addressed immigration and illegal border crossings. The President said, "We are the United States of America."

Stewart said, "Nailed it! He knew exactly where we are. Yes! He knew what country we were in. Bang, boom. This is the United States of America. I take back everything I said a month ago."

But in a bipartisan move, Biden publicly pled with Trump to come to a middle ground with him, "instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me or I'll join you in telling Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. We can do it together."

"Ladies and gentlemen, the olive branch has been extended across the aisle in a show of genuine desire to solve this complex and vexing issue. Trump, your response?" Stewart said.

Also in Texas, Trump, who repurposed his nickname for Hillary Clinton for Biden said, "Crooked Joe is the blood of countless innocent victims."

“Do you have to say everything that happens in your head out loud?” Stewart said with exasperation. “It’s been eight years. You f**king won! The woman’s been through enough, now you’re going to take away her nickname?”

Additionally, Stewart, a New Yorker himself, criticized NYC mayor, Eric Adams, who also shared similar sentiments with Democrats about welcoming migrants to the U.S. But then changed his tune and said that the city had “no more room” after two busloads of migrants arrived in the city from Texas.

“So this is the terrible cycle America is caught in: Democrats whose high-minded values and principles did not survive a contact high with reality, and Republicans whose desire to solve the problem isn’t nearly as strong as their desire to exploit it,” Stewart concluded. “And no one wins.”

James said the penalties paid by all defendants totaled more than $450 million, including interest. “It was already on the top of the list of being a loser state. I would never invest in New York now,” O’Leary said. “And I’m not the only person saying that.”

O’Leary claimed existing businesses and new ventures are going to different states such as Texas and Florida.

“So, they’ve got lots of work to do to find themselves getting out of this situation. This has all occurred post-pandemic … winner states versus loser states,” he said.

Fox Business anchor Neil Cavuto then asked O’Leary what he thinks about New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D) attempted assurances to New York business owners, in which she told residents there was “nothing to worry about.”

“We’re very worried, every investor is worried because where is the victim? Who lost the money? This is some arbitrary decision a judge made,” O’Leary responded. “This policy … what does this say about the bar? About the legal bar in New York? Aren’t they going to question this judge? What is this?”

“I’m sorry her words fall on deaf ears to everybody,” he added. “There’s nothing she can say to justify this decision. And this has nothing to do with Trump, nothing to do with Trump. Forget about Trump, this is not a Trump situation, this is a New York problem.”

The Hill reached out to Hochul’s office for comment.
