Kartik Kumar is a well-known Eminent Sitarist and Surbahar Maestro from India. Pandit Kartik is the senior-most disciple of Legendary Sitar Virtuoso Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar . He plays and is carrying the Maihar Gharana style of music. Pandit Kartik Kumar is the son of Calcutta’s one of the well-known sitarists, Mangal Charan Das. Playing sitar is there in his blood. He got fame in the world of art and music in 1958 when he bagged the President’s Gold Medal for sitar at a music competition held by AIR. Pandit Ravi Shankar noticed him playing in a festival and decided to teach him and make him his disciple.
Kartik Kumar got international fame and success in 1978 when he was invited to play in a concert in the USA’s bicentennial. He assisted his Guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar, and was a part of his creative projects and live concerts. He has his unique style of playing sitar, which mesmerizes and enthralls the audience. His live performance across the world has got him fame. His composition of Alap, Jod, Gat Kari and Jhala are like music treat to listen to. His detailed knowledge of Rags in music is a gold treasure itself. He has trained and groomed his son Niladri who is the next pride of the generation.
