Officer Shot During Traffic Stop Shootout Over Seatbelt Violation

During a traffic stop in Humboldt Park on March 21, Dexter Reed, aged 26, lost his life. Officers in an unmarked police car pulled him over, alleging a failure to wear a seatbelt.

In the chaotic video footage, Reed is seen rolling down his SUV's window before raising it again. He then refuses to exit his vehicle while five officers shout commands and draw their weapons.

According to preliminary evidence, Reed fired the first shot at one officer during the incident on West Ferdinand Street. In response, four other officers returned fire, as stated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
