There is little political appetite in Ukraine to feed what youth they have left into the meat grinder. Especially when the outcome of the war is so certain — negotiation with Russia. This is why it took Zelensky a year to authorise lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25.

Two articles in the NYT put the story firmly in the headline — no buried ledes today! — ”Ukraine’s Parliament Passes a Politically Fraught Mobilisation Bill” and “Ukraine’s New Draft Law Unsettles the Young”. The MSM is starting to report on the human cost of “fighting Russia down to the last Ukrainian”. The question is why now — and should Zelensky be worried?!
