Many in show business share a feeling that “Furiosa” will be big — but at Warner Bros.’ presentation to global movie theater owners on Tuesday, attendees got a taste of just how colossal the “Mad Max” entry might be.

Director George Miller and his stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth made the trek to Las Vegas’ CinemaCon to show an extended look at the new film. The result was a sonic and visual onslaught of fire, metal, chainmail, war paint, crushed bones and bloodsoaked revenge. In other words, it played fucking awesome in the room. The overwhelming footage will likely be a sensation in the IMAX format, given the audience response.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” tells the origin story of the warrior queen character portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Taylor-Joy, a fashion darling with a prestigious resume, proved to the crowd inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace that she’s more than ready to get gritty. Miller’s footage told a story in four brief chapters: Furiosa’s kidnapping as a child and pledge to return home; her rebellion against her usurper; her mercenary training; and, thrillingly, the absolute path of destruction she leaves in her wake.

“It’s a story of relentless hope,” Taylor-Joy said. She also praised Miller’s production design, direction and VFX sensibilities as artful, saying he “painted every scene, and I mean he paints.” Hemsworth also shared a personal connection to the franchise “being Australian and watching these films with my family, particularly my father.”

The movie, which will world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, will hit theaters on May 24.

Warner Bros‘ first big splash at its 2024 CinemaCon presentation today was George Miller‘s Furiosa.

Taking the stage were Miller and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, who were interviewed by Warner Bros co-bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.

“To tell the story of Mad Max, we had to know where every vehicle, every character, every prop, every gesture came from,” Miller said. “We wrote backstories of Furiosa overall these years and Mad Max the year before. When Fury Road had enough traction, we figured we had to do Furiosa.”

The trio showed off an extended first look today. We see Hemswroth’s Dementus, who’s something of white linen-clad prophet. He’s brought a young Furiosa. They live in, natch, a radical world where we see Furiosa’s mother crucified. “I remember your face and your memory,” says Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa in what is a revenge tale. Lots of fire, lots of trucks, lots of loud in what appears even more attention to dystiopian desert landscapes, even more than 2015’s multi-Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road. “My mother, my childhood — I want them back,” Furiosa says in the footage.

“This is the story of one woman’s relentless commitment to hope,” Taylor-Joy told the exhibitors gathered at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. “We see her go through everything, and that hope isn’t crushed. It was an honor to play this character.”

Miller said on why he chose the Emmy-winning Queen’s Gambit thespian: “Anya needed to be someone who you could spend all those months in the wasteland in. [She’s] someone is really resolute, brilliant and very smart. If the apocalypse came, she’d be one of the first I’d hang with.”

De Luca called Hemsworth’s Dementus “a lunatic” and “charismatic.”

Hemsworth said that he chose the role, a barker in a nomadic tribe, because “It comes down to the script initially, the conversation that George and I had –the script definitely informed was an individual, twisted…there had to be an element of charisma.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga world premieres May 15 at the Cannes Film Festival. Warner Bros then begins global rollout on May 22 before reaching North America on May 24.

As the world falls, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. She will spend the rest of her life battling to get back home
