2 NYPD Officers Shot By Felon With Officer's Gun. Served 15 Years In Prison For Attempted Murder.

According to police, on January 16, 2024 at 3.01 p.m., NYPD 73 Precinct patrol officers responded to a 911 call at 1969 Bergen Street, Apartment 2B. This call for assistance was in regards to an assault in progress. This call for help was made by the female occupant of that apartment.This victim informed 911 that she was being physically assaulted by her son. She complained of a head injury. One sergeant and three police officers responded to the scene and immediately identified the perpetrator. He was Melvin Butler, male, 39 years old.
Officers informed Mr. Butler that he was under arrest and asked him to place his hands behind his back. At this time, Butler resists and a violent struggle ensues. At some point, Butler grabs hold of an officer's service weapon and shots are fired.
During the struggle, while Butler Possessed officer Brennan's firearm, officer Acevedo discharged 3 shots, officer Lafaille discharged 3 shots, and Sergeant Groth discharged one shots at Butler.
Ballistics evidence recovered from the scene revealed that Butler discharged 2 shots from officer Brennan's firearm
One officer was shot in the left hand, another officer was shot in the left thigh. Both officers were being treated at KCH and are recovering from their wounds. Butler himself was shot multiple times and he was treated for his injuries.
Butler was arrested and charged with:
Attemped murder in the first degree (police officer),
Assault in the second degree,
Robbery in the third degree,
Criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree,
and related charges.
Melvin Butler, age 39 has six prior arrests in New York City and one prior arrest in North Carolina. He has a history of resisting arrest and of domestic violence.
In addition, in 2004 he was convicted for attempted murder for which he served 15 years in prison.
