Þrymskviða recounts the myth of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, being stolen by the giant Þrymr (Thrym). The narrative is a mix of humor, cunning, and action.

The poem begins with Thor waking up to find that his hammer, Mjölnir, is missing. He becomes furious and seeks counsel from the god Heimdall. It is revealed that the giant Þrymr has stolen Mjölnir and demands the goddess Freyja as his bride in exchange for its return.

In a council of the gods, Loki suggests a daring plan to retrieve the hammer. Thor, disguised as Freyja, and Loki, disguised as a bridesmaid, travel to Jotunheim (the land of the giants) to meet Þrymr. The giant is smitten by what he believes to be Freyja, but Loki's quick wit saves the day, claiming that "Freyja" hasn't eaten for days due to excitement.

During the wedding feast, Thor reveals his true identity and retrieves Mjölnir from Þrymr, proceeding to unleash his wrath upon the giants.

Þrymskviða is notable for its blend of humor and heroism. It showcases Loki's cunning and Thor's physical prowess, highlighting the different attributes of the gods. The gender-bending aspect, with Thor posing as Freyja, adds a comedic element to the story.

The poem contributes to the broader theme of Thor's exploits and showcases the challenges he faces in protecting his powerful weapon. Þrymskviða also offers insights into Norse cultural elements, such as the importance of honor, marriage alliances, and the role of humor in their storytelling traditions.
