Hymiskviða (The Lay of Hymir) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Hymiskviða recounts an episode involving the thunder god Thor and the giant Hymir. The narrative revolves around Thor's journey to acquire a cauldron from the giant, leading to a series of challenges and adventures.

The poem begins with Thor seeking a suitable cauldron for the gods' feasts. He decides to visit the giant Hymir, known for possessing a colossal cauldron. Thor, accompanied by his servant Thjálfi, arrives at Hymir's dwelling and requests the cauldron for the gods.

Hymir, initially reluctant to part with the cauldron, challenges Thor to prove his strength by performing various tasks. Thor easily accomplishes feats such as lifting Hymir's oxen and breaking the giant's immense drinking cup. Despite these demonstrations, Hymir remains unyielding.

To further test Thor's strength, Hymir suggests a fishing expedition. Thor agrees, and they set out to sea. Thor catches two sea serpents, but Hymir panics and cuts the fishing line, allowing one serpent to escape. Thor manages to kill the remaining serpent and returns to Hymir's hall with it.

The poem concludes with Thor, frustrated by Hymir's refusal to part with the cauldron, using his hammer, Mjölnir, to shatter the giant's head and take the cauldron back to the realm of the gods.

Hymiskviða showcases Thor's physical prowess, his confrontations with giants, and his determination to acquire valuable items for the gods. The narrative reflects themes of strength, heroism, and the challenges faced by gods in their interactions with giants.

The episode with the sea serpent adds a mythical and adventurous element to the story, emphasizing Thor's role as a defender of the divine order and the lengths to which he will go to secure resources for the gods.

Hymiskviða is a poetic account of Thor's encounter with the giant Hymir, focusing on the challenges faced by the thunder god in acquiring a cauldron for the gods and highlighting his feats of strength and determination.
