Sabr (صبر) in Islam is derived from the root word “s-b-r,” signifying restraint, patience, and enduring with dignity. However, the Islamic concept of Sabr goes beyond mere endurance. It encapsulates an active, intentional response to life’s challenges and difficulties, grounded in faith and trust in Allah’s divine plan 12.

As a concept in Islam, sabr is often translated as patience, but it also includes aspects of restraint, self-discipline, steadfastness, firmness, perseverance, endurance, and determination—depending on the context in which it is used. Sabr conveys a very active, dynamic, and positive quality in Islam 3. It represents devotion to Allah, the ability to remain composed and steadfast during trials, and the commitment to fulfilling religious obligations while controlling one’s emotions and desires
