Un culto è un gruppo che è tipicamente guidato da un leader carismatico e autoproclamato, che controlla strettamente i suoi membri, richiedendo una devozione incrollabile a un insieme di credenze e pratiche che sono considerate devianti (al di fuori delle norme della società). Questo senso del termine è debolmente definito – con definizioni divergenti sia nella cultura popolare che nel mondo accademico – ed è stato anche una continua fonte di contesa tra gli studiosi in diversi campi di studio. Un senso più antico della parola, che non è peggiorativo, coinvolge un insieme di pratiche devozionali religiose che sono convenzionali all'interno della sua cultura, sono legate a una particolare figura ed è spesso associato a un luogo particolare. Un nuovo movimento religioso (NMR) è una comunità religiosa o un gruppo spirituale di origini moderne (dalla metà del XIX secolo), che ha un posto periferico all'interno della cultura religiosa dominante della sua società. I NMR possono essere di origine nuova o parte di una religione più ampia, nel qual caso sono distinti dalle denominazioni preesistenti.
