Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I,Ref-Staten Island, Brooklyn), representatives of over a half-dozen New York City and state law enforcement unions, community activists and concerned citizens turned out for a Thursday morning news conference at the 4th Avenue and 95th Street Subway Station in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

In late January, the station was the site of the assault and attempted rape of a 31-year-old woman by a 20-year-old alleged perpetrator with nearly a dozen arrests, who was released from Rikers Island on December 19 after a previous arrest, was reviewed under the state’s new bail reform laws. Malliotakis called the assault and rape, “just one more alarming example of why New York’s bail reform law needs to be scrapped; it returns dangerous criminals to the street by deconstructing the laws that protect law-abiding citizens.”

A variety of law-enforcement unions were represented by their leadership, including: President Ed Mullins of the NYPD-Sergeants’ Benevolent Association, President Paul DiGiacomo of the NYPD-Detectives’ Endowment Association, President Christopher Monahan of the NYPD-Captains Endowment Association, President Dennis Quirk of the New York State Court Officers Association and President Patrick Cullen of the Supreme Court Officers Association. In addition, members of the NYPD-Police Benevolent Association, the NYPD-Lieutenants Benevolent Association and the NYC-Corrections Officers’ Benevolent Association were also in attendance.
