This video demonstrates very stable magnetic levitation by induced eddy currents through a moving conductor. The technology is described in
US Patent 5,319,336 titled: Levitation Device.

Our work with levitating forces began about 30 years ago. We had some insight into a way to take a permanent magnet and use its own field to levitate itself in a very stable position through a term known as “eddy current induction”, aka “electrodynamic levitation”.

In 1842, Samuel Earnshaw proved what is now called Earnshaw's Theorem, which states that there is no stable and static configuration of levitating permanent magnets.

The technology does not violate but works around Earnshaw's Theorem by orienting the magnetic field in a perpendicular direction of the relative motion above a conducting metal such as aluminum.

The technology was featured in Extraordinary Science October 1993 Edition "Alcon Breakthrough in Magnetic Levitation".

A short video a our levitation device taken from a symposium with UCLA University on various forms of Levitation is seen at:

The “Alcon Levitator” technology is still being studied today. An article published in the American Journal of Physics 87 (4) April 2019 discloses on page 3 and 4 of experiments performed by students in Spain studying the effects of the “Alcon Levitator” as the technology has been referred to by UCLA.

The “Alcon Levitator” is also mentioned in a book written by James D. Livingston called: “Rising Force” THE MAGIC OF MAGNETIC LEVITATION. Beginning on the last paragraph of page 71 and continuing on page 72, Mr. Livingston lists the “Alcon Levitator” As a patented contact free form of eddy current levitation.

The levitator was designed as a bench top demonstration for the magnetic stabilization forces of a magnetic dipole in a levitated state. Once the discovery was made, we started working on a design for a maglev transportation which would operate off of an aluminum guideway.
