Russia Says Big Powers Need to Stop 'Strangling' North Korea

Russia has said that major powers should stop "strangling" North Korea. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the US was stoking military tensions in Asia. She added that international restrictions did not improve the security situation and that there were severe humanitarian consequences for the North Korean population. The comments were made after Russia vetoed the annual renewal of an expert panel meant to monitor the enforcement of United Nations sanctions against North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. Russia said the experts' work was neither objective nor impartial and called the panel a tool of the West. The US said it was "deeply disappointed" with Russia's veto.
